The pic with the random people rummaging around with bare hands in the piles of mixed meat is so disgusting and unhealthy. Have they no standards?

Rochard 09-04-2011 10:08 AM

Why do the lizards have basketballs in the mouths?

And why don't they sell live frogs at WalMart locally here? Or is that something they do in the south only in the US?

seeandsee 09-04-2011 10:12 AM

they dont care too much about food or all sells in 1 hour? :D

iamtam 09-04-2011 10:26 AM

ahh, the ramblings of the uninformed.

first off most people in china dont have a refrigerator, or dont consider to keep things longer. they get what they need to eat today, not forever. they are use to going to a local butcher where nothing is wrapped in plastic, you get the chunk you want.

unlike western people, many asian countries also eat all parts of the animal. as an example, tripe is very popular, or bbq pig stomach and it tastes good too. they also consider almost any animal as edible, and do so with pleasure and enjoyment.

standards and methods are different in different countries. you have to experience it to understand it and live with the people a while to understand why they do it.

I'm assuming it tastes like lead-laced kerosene

beerptrol 09-04-2011 11:18 AM

I found that interesting

alias 09-04-2011 11:19 AM

Looks like the butcher area is inside a cooler.

the orange juice and oil looks like the oj company trying to get into more homes. oil is purchased and used for almost all cooking, so it would be a good place to get exposure.

the bare hands picking meat is mostly because they dont see the issue. simply put, they are going to clean it and cook it at home, so why worry about someone touching it now? they dont tend to serve rare cooked meat in china.

My Pimp 09-04-2011 12:35 PM

If I travel to china, then I will visit a wal mart. Must see it with my own eyes.

Give me a break.

Just because I don't live there, doesn't not make that shit nasty and disgusting.

That's some unsanitary shit right there.

Everytime I visit a chinatown, I always smell some god awful shit that makes me wanna vomit.

Some people like to eat poop. Some don't.

harvey 09-04-2011 05:07 PM

exception made of the reptiles, not very different to any Chinese supermarket here, including the lack of sanitary measures :Oh crap (OK, I'm exaggerating, but not by THAT much)

Anyway, if they don't care, why should we? I've seen places in Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Spain and UK that are just as unsanitary (or more) as that Chinese Walmart. And I like food and cooking TV shows, and every time I see something from Asia (not only China), I fell like "eeew", but it seems it's OK for them, so probably a cultural thing

bronco67 09-04-2011 05:11 PM

I have spent time in China and this walmart clean by Chinese standards.

Oh, and these people eat ANYTHING! They also like swallow's nests.... 300us for a kilo of birdshit and grass.

so what i see people in the united states at the grocery store picking through fruits and vegetables just like those pictures where they are picking through meat. at least the meat is going to get cooked at high heat. can't say the same for all the fruits and vegetables that people rinse off with cold water and consume.

Redrob 09-04-2011 11:22 PM

Dim Sum.....has it all. Don't ask, just eat and enjoy.

I had Beijing Duck in Beijing at a nice restaurant and the waiter said that he was going to serve me everything but the "quack." And, he was right.

Haha good point!

nico-t 09-05-2011 03:10 AM

i went to a market like that in china, with huge selections of meat and fish. It's indeed being sold out fast because it's busy as hell, and its far from dirty or whatever. Meat and fish gets grilled cooked etc, so who cares? Ive had some of the best tasting meals ive ever eaten in china.

nico-t 09-05-2011 03:13 AM

btw that chinese style liquor is pretty good, cheap as hell and alcohol percentage from 35 to 65% and i bet they even have stronger versions that i havent seen. Very distinctive taste, a kind of strong sweet taste. Pretty good for mixing drinks too ;)

Looks pretty normal to me. The live frogs crack me up, they sell them live because eating the heart off the frog while still beating is a great delicacy.

sorry, my experience is that most chinese families did not grow up with a large american style refrigerator, many of them had none at all. most of them are not clued into the idea of "buy once a week, keep it in the fridge until you need it" as many americans do.

most chinese buy locally, in their neighborhood, and buy it for more of less immediate consumption. they dont buy meat and keep it in the fridge for a couple of days. they buy it and cook it almost directly.

how long did you spend there?
