I was the first male in our family not to be a Marine since like the early 1800s. The ones who were still alive at the time when it briefly crossed my mind, said DON'T DO IT. So I didn't.

Seems their mindset changed after Vietnam.

I love how everyone in the military claims to be special forces. LOL.

It gets worse after you get out too. Everyone claims they were in special forces.

I am a a third generation US Marine. My grandfather planted the seed that became my father and then died in the South Pacific. My father had me, and when I was nine months old he died in Vietnam. I could only imagine what my mother thought when I joined the Marines.

When I tried to figure out what service I was going to join, what came to mind was where they are stationed, Marines and Army play in the mud alot, Air Force bases are always in some desert and the coast guard doesn't go anywhere, I ended up home ported in Hawaii

Right at the time it was crossing my mine was just when things were starting to act up in the first Gulf War. My uncle thought it had the potential to be another Vietnam cluster fuck and urged me not to enlist. I'm glad I didn't looking back, but there was a period of a few months where I was very close. Without a few who had served in Vietnam telling me not to do it, I think I would have. Can't imagine how different life would be today if I took that path.

But as luck would have it, I now live close to Vietnam, and in a city that the US military used as R&R. I always wonder if my old man was over here tagging Viet and Thai whores, and if so, if I have any half breed siblings running about. Then I wonder if some girl I'm nailing is the daughter of my long lost sister or brother. Sometimes it fucks with my head if they start talking about their mom' mom was knocked up by someone in the US military.

I think of all the phillipine whores I was with and wonder how I survived. Always gave a false name, LOL

And yes in denmark you actually DO DRAW A NUMBER from freaking hat, low number means you are in, medium means you are in if they do not get enough volunteers and a high number means you get a pass

Ditto. At the O-6 level politics and image are very important and this is that kind of stuff that can screw up a career. I was with 2/18th F.A. attached to the 18th Airborne during desert storm and we had an O-5 whose wife's public antics, with his name attached, got him in all kinds of shit, and he was never able to pass a promotion board afterwards. He ended up RIFing out 4 years later, still an O-5
