What's the Most Popular Porn Site on Earth? (And What Does That Say About Our Relationship to Sex?)

A webcam site featuring mostly underpaid women from non-Western countries gets the most views. What does that say about Western sexuality?

O MARINA 09-20-2011 11:22 AM

Almost all of the webcam girls are from eastern Europe or southeast Asia. At $8-$15/hour with no benefits

Well question is does those stats have any sense considering they have popunder on almost every major tube site.

yea true I do see the popups everywhere and god knows how many affiliates they have too. Wonder if their traffic reflects their profits or are a lot of them free loaders

I always wondered what kind of effect the "Shoe On Head" had on the business

It was viral and certainly generated a ton of traffic, though I am sure the conversion was shit. That said though, I wonder if over time YMND and 4Chan users did cross over into paying customers. :upsidedow

Not a lot, since most of the visitors to LJ are from mumbo-jumbo land.

This is due to 90% of webcam affiliates being clueless dipshits who promote cams as "free", send boat-loads of freeloading third world traffic, and then complain about it here because they can't understand why it doesn't convert.

Quote:

who would have guessed that porn only accounts for 4% of the internet?
I'm surprised it's that high.

Quote:

They might, when they're old enough to get a credit card. :)

Though one effect of that may have been LJ preventing 'free' guests from changing their names. All guests on every cam site are now comprehensively ignored.

CaptainHowdy 09-20-2011 12:14 PM

"Sexual relationship", that's naive ...

[QUOTE=porno jew;18439731]A webcam site featuring mostly underpaid women from non-Western countries gets the most views. What does that say about Western sexuality?

I think it says less about Western sexuality and more about capitalism and the bottom line.

okok 09-20-2011 12:23 PM

I feel like the author is really stretching to push the idea that cams customers are getting off on the idea of dominating underpaid workers. It's her preconception and a weak premise. Then drawing comparisons to vile sex slavery in Cambodia?

I feel like this article is really about that terrible experience she had in Cambodia and how it seeps into her views on sex-workers in general. Notice how she dances around sex-work issues in an effort not to offend sex-positive feminist Alternet readers.

It's an incoherent piece that seems to be grabbing at straws (for building strawmen, natch) to evoke a response from the reader.

Call me cynical but I'm a little tired of Alternet/Huffpo/et al having degenerated into pageview machines instead of putting out solid progressive-slanted journalism and opinion. This article made me feel dumber for having read it.

Great find PJ.

Interesting article from someone who knows nothing about Eastern European or Asian women.

I've married to 2 of them and neither were what she makes out. No one would ever describe Eva or my second wife as she has. Both very powerful personalities, yet mot like the Western model. They get their own way in a much easier and less confrontational way.

Guys go to Thailand, Cambodia not because they can boss the girls around and dominate them. They go because they don't want a hooker who will boss and dominate them.

As DWB says a lot of the guys are unable to get laid nicely without paying for it in the Far East.

This Jill broad should try planting rice for a week and then she'll rush to the Girlie bar to sell her ass to get out. I've done it and it's the worse job imaginable. The stench off the paddy field is awful, then the heat and humidity, the glare coming off the water hitting your eyes, pull your feet out and brush the leeches off of them. And all for 50 cents a day. So she can have cheap rice on her plate.

I did it 25 years ago and scratched myself, still got the scar from where it went septic.

Great find PJ

Agreed. I think that taking it all the way to a comparison of particularly degrading underage sexwork is going a bit far, but the fact is that cam work can be a very taxing job because of a large percentage of the clientele.

That one's easy. Cam sites are exploiting everyone:

Performers, members and affiliates. :winkwink:

According to Alexa, which I don't think automatically equates into "most popular" just the site that has been popped under the most.

Interesting. Would you say that this describes the majority of the clientele? That would definitely force me to think more deeply about this.

I'm familiar with the shoe-on-head 4chan-style raiders whom I would liken more to XBOX Live kids being kids (in a 21st century kind of way) than mature adults who are actually paying for the privilege.

With your experience in this arena, do you feel like the abuse you've seen was as widespread before MFC disrupted with the free/tips model? Or was it just as bad?

The most interesting part of the article for me was the % of the traffic the site in question is getting. However, after quite a few posts that number can definitely be misleading :)

Agree, I didn't really take much stock in the author's opinion on live cams after I read it was written by an 86 yr old female. I think the traffic stats in the article are somewhat inflated http://siteanalytics.compete.com/livejasmin.com/

On a side note though, the popularity of livejasmin.com proves you can still take a $10 domain and turn it into a top 50 web property. I think of the 50 or so cam programs I've seen come and go over the last decade, AWE's livejasmin.com is probably the most obscure and least brandable main cam site name I've seen. Unless I'm missing something, why "jasmin"? In the US, the name is generally spelled Jasmine. I've never seen any explanation of that name selection, does "jasmin" mean something in another language?

I always thought it was about the best name of all because it was obscure. webcams.com like to jerk off over their name but IMHO it's bland and a poor relative of cams.com, Streamate is so bad they had to register Streammate too. Imlive is also no great shakes, IMO. LJ is unusual enough to be memorable. JOYourself OTOH.... I think they were just seeing how far they could go with absurd names.

As for LiveJasmin, it simply comes from their 'parent' Hungarian company, Jasmin, right? Perhaps the name is from a relative or child of one of the founders, though IIRC they used to have the flower on the jasmin.hu page years ago, so I always thought it was from the plant.

It shouldn't... a HELL of a lot of the tube sites pop it open on a surfers first click... So in reality, it's getting a shit load of just "false" traffic making it appear to have more traffic than it really does.

he used to have a livejasmin clone on there. was typically showing about 250K a period in sales (80ish K net to him).

it changed into the tea site right around the time awe stepped up their adwords rules, so who knows, maybe he was spending a lot on traffic too... but at one time that site was making some serious sales

Not sure I follow your logic on more obscure = best. The name would most likely indicate a solo site cam model, certainly not a large live cam portal. I've never seen any indication there is a parent company by the name of Jasmin on their site or whois. At least streamate had the forethought to register their similar name whereas livejasmin failed to even register the most obvious typo livejasmine.

Yeah I remember that guy, he was killing it. Wonder if AWE took some legal action to get the domain and he quickly changed the site in order to keep the domain. You'd think if anything he could have struck a deal to sell the domain to AWE based on all the traffic it receives.

Not always, but in this case I think yes. By obscure I mean least related to cams, therefore more memorable. How many people look stuff up on search.com? So called 'category killer' domains are bland and characterless, IMO. Would this place be the same if it was called adultforum.com?

I've never thought that, though I can see why some people might. I think I have thought Imlive sounds more like a single-person-on-cam name though.

True. Though I always assumed the top AWE affiliates and/or people with "jasmin" domains were connected to LJ anyway, which is why they were allowed to use the name.

Only time obscure becomes more memorable than a premium self descriptive domain is if you poor a ton of cash into branding it. There was one affiliate I remember who registered many LJ variations and was one of their top affiliates, but not sure he is still promoting them anymore. I've been one of AWE's biggest critics over the years for their shady business practices, but I will say that they've done a hell of a job at successfully growing their product. Instead of spending a million on something like cams.com, they took a reg fee domain and spent a ton on traffic and its paid off.
