Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis Dies at 82
Well, for some Raiders fans its been a long time coming.. but with a heavy heart I post this msg.. he was a living legend until today. Al Davis has died. RIP Al.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Al Davis, the Hall of Fame owner of the Oakland Raiders known for his rebellious spirit, has died. The team said the 82-year-old died at his home in Oakland on Saturday morning. It was Davis’ willingness to buck the establishment that helped turn the NFL into THE establishment in sports—the most successful sports league in American history. Davis was charming, cantankerous and compassionate—a man who when his wife suffered a serious heart attack in the 1970s moved into her hospital room. But he was best known as a rebel, a man who established a team whose silver-and-black colors and pirate logo symbolized his attitude toward authority, both on the field and off.... read more http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d6...ds/aldavis.jpg |

As a lifelong Raider fan this isn't unexpected, but it is a sad day. The NFL would not be the league it is without him.

Love him or hate him, he did it his way.

they showed him up in his skybox as they usually do during the games .. just last weekend.
Strange because so many people always used to say, man I wish he'd just die and let the coaches run the team... they got their wish. He definitely did things his way.. He was the man.. Sad to see him go. Now Go Raiders. |
Tough week for rebels, iconoclasts and pirates....

RIP Al Davis

I've been a lifelong Raiders fan. As such, I had a love-hate relationship with Al Davis. Nonetheless, today is a sad day for much of the Raider Nation. Whatever your feelings are about the man, his football accomplishments and contributions to the game, are undeniable. In 1963, at age 33, Davis became the youngest head coach and general manager of a professional football team. Under Davis, the Raiders became one of the most successful teams in all of professional sports. From 1967 to 1985 the team won 13 division championships, one AFL championship (1967), three Super Bowls (XI, XV, and XVIII) and made 15 playoff appearances. Though the Raiders' fortunes have waned in recent years, they are one of two teams to play in the Super Bowl in four different decades, with the other being the Pittsburgh Steelers. Along with appearing in five Super Bowls, the Raiders have also played in their Conference/League Championship Game in every decade since their inception. Davis hired the first black head coach of the modern era - Art Shell in 1988. He hired the first Latino coach, Tom Flores; and the first woman CEO, Amy Trask. And he was infallibly loyal to his players and officials: to be a Raider was to be a Raider for life. Unfortunately, the game seems to have passed him by in the last decade or so, and it is unclear to me what plans he made for the team following his passing. Some say his son, Marc, will take over. We'll see. Al Davis left an indelible mark on NFL football, and for that he will be long remembered. RIP Al Davis... ADG |
thank you for that ADG, well said.

yeah great game.. of course the Raiders nearly lose it in the end but with 7 seconds left and houston just yards from the end zone they hike it, QB sees a space to run it in, a raider sees him and runs forward preventing his run-in, forcing him to throw it, intercepted! Raiders take the W.
Al Davis, helping hand from his new skybox? I like to think so. So did the coach. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shu...urn=nfl-wp9077 |
