Web Designers, a Question

Looking at my visitor stats, i see that only 17 percent of my web traffic is still 1024x768 or lower, while the other 83 percent are looking at my sites in screen resolutions over 1024x768.

Havey ou ever though of making a site with a width of around 1200px? I wonder when this will become the standard?

Fletch XXX 10-12-2011 05:43 AM

ive done things in that range, definitely doing more and more 1000+ stuff.

digitaldivas 10-12-2011 05:46 AM

yeah it seems like the natural progression of things. I like it! :thumbsup

yes clients have always wanted to maximize screenspace in designs.

and as someone who has been doing ads for adult marketing campaigns for over 10 years I can say the size of ads have DEFINITELY increased. So if ads are, site width is too. :winkwink:

We are in the midst of designing a new preggo site and going with just under 1200 wide.

Time will tell how it goes, should be ready next month

theS2O 10-12-2011 06:53 AM

I've done some 1200 width layouts as well. IMO around 990 to 1000px layouts would be a safe size for most screen resolutions.

digitaldivas 10-12-2011 06:55 AM

yes i agree, i am going to do my next couple of paysites at maybe 1100 px and see how that goes.

Stick to 960 wide just in case.

ottopottomouse 10-12-2011 09:12 AM

Just because screens are getting larger doesn't necessarily mean people are going to be viewing sites with their browser at full-screen size.

MediaGuy 10-12-2011 09:16 AM

We're using 1018px as the basic default width of site containers now.

:D

by default we create them for 1024px , but in your case I would try a higher res :)

sojproductions 10-12-2011 09:36 AM

we always keep them around 990, surprised at the stats with only 17% viewing lower res, it was only about 2.5-3 years ago when it was 65-70% viewing lower.

I am working on a site for a friend of mine and we are going to a width of 1150 because most of his clients are in the design biz.

Do you prefer fixed width over fluid? If so, why?

fluid layouts are the best but all depends on your needs. if you can't go fluid, stay under 1k. folks around 960 will still see the majority. folks at 800, fuck em they must like scrolling sideways

mainstream company i used to work for designed their site ~1000px wide, then wanted to do ad skins on the sides. cause a lot of arguments with advertising clients on shit monitors trying to cheick their campaign :1orglaugh
