Imessage doesnt work for me also the option to start the camera at the opening screen is non existant. I have an iphone 4.

Looks like everything works fine on my iP4. Imessage is not a separate application, it's built in Text Messages, it's automatically selects how to send your message, by text or Imessage, works like a charm.

But how do you know when it does either of them? I see nothing different compared to before?

before you start typing in the little box of a text message...if the person also has imessage it will say "imessage" in the field in light gray before u type anything
