I'm primarily a webmaster.

I have a Macbook for home and a netbook for working wherever. Planning on getting a desktop with 2 23" monitors, 2.8+ ghz i3/i5, 1tb+ hdd, 8 gigs ram.

Printer: Brother laser printer.

I have some cisco routers, and some 1u servers here at home to play around with.

I don't shoot models or anything, but I do shoot content for my mainstream websites. I have a Nikon L120 21x zoom 14mp camera for that, with a tripod, a monopod, and a gorilla pod.

Imac 27" i7, 2.9 Ghz, 1GB graphics, 2 x 2TB + 3 x 1TB backup drives, 8 GB ram
Camera: Nikon D50+2 lens.

how fast does that thing render video?

raymor 10-13-2011 08:33 PM

Since I'm not rendering video, I could probably go back to my old Athlon 750 with 256MB RAM and it would be fine.
What kind of bloatware do you guys run where it matters anymore? Hell my phone is more powerful than my first few servers.

8GB of RAM? For what, reading email and posting? I guess Windows now takes a couple GB just to boot, so I can see maybe having 4GB to get the same performance Linux provides on 2GB, but what's the point of 8GB or more on a desktop?

You can get 8GB of DDR31600 for less than $50 right now, so why not? I do a lot of things with my PC including gaming and using my extra ram for photoshop scratch disks. I also run a lot of virtual boxes which you do need more memory for. Now is one of the best times to buy memory with the prices so low. Why just get 4GB when I can spend an extra $10 or 15 bucks to get another 4GB?

My Windows 7 boot uses RAM just as my linux boot does.

have a ps box with i7 975 12g ram- 2, 30 inch cinamas and a render box with i7 950 12g ram w/ some 24' monitor

digitaldivas 10-13-2011 09:43 PM

As a video editor, I can certainly say that my box renders much faster with less time outs than with 8, rather than 4gb of video. Also working with raw files, yes i still convert manually, it's a blessing to do stuff in realtime and convert a 4000k + pic, crop it, color correct it and watermark it in about 2 seconds a pop.

The new imacs are also expandable to 16Gb or ram. I'm just using 2 out of the 4 provided slots.
