Police Kill Dozens of Animals Freed From Ohio Preserve

ZANESVILLE, Ohio ? Law enforcement officials in Ohio on Wednesday said they believed they had captured or killed all but three of the animals that escaped from an exotic animal preserve after the owner of the property released the animals before he fatally shot himself.

At least 25 animals ? including lions, wolves, bears and at least one tiger ? were shot and killed by deputies and other law enforcement personnel armed with assault rifles to prevent the animals from attacking humans, said Sheriff Matt Lutz of Muskingum County.

It was an emergency situation and (according to the article) deputies don't carry tranquilizer darts with them. I'm sure they did the best they could.

I'm sure they could get access to them from somewhere if they had the time anyway.

Understandable if it was near homes and shit though.. My uncle had some emu's as pets a number of years back, sounds like fun but those things are practically raptors with feathers... mean as shit, fast as hell and will cut you open good with those claws.. one got loose when he was changing out the cages so they had to track it down and shoot it. Was out in a rural area but if it ever got near any children it would have been bad.

I doubt any county (or country) could put together multiple teams capable of safely capturing 25 wild animals on such short notice. A few people would have been mauled to death by the time they finished capturing them all.

I think this statement by Sheriff Lutz sums up the intellect of the average person that lives around "those parts".

"These are wild animals that you would see on TV, in Africa," Lutz said on Tuesday night.

How difficult is it to call Animal Control?? They have tranqs in abundance. This is just a case of police seeing the opportunity for a wild shootout and getting away with it. Grrr this shit pisses me off. There are animal sanctuaries such as Animal Acres and FarmSanctuary in the US that have the means to take care of wild animals until/if/when they can be released to where they came from.

Of course wild animals like lions and other exotic wildlife shouldn't be "owned" in the first place. Leave'em alone or go on a trip to see them in their natural habitat if ur interested in them!

Once they had tranqs they used them.. But tranqs aren't instant, even more so when the animal is riled up... For example, they shot a tiger with a tranq but before it took affect it charged them and so they had to put it down.

How awful people can be :(

I agree with you Tempest, sometimes lethal methods are required to save another life. Having said that, again, non of this would have happened had it not been for trying to "domesticate" wild animals in completely inappropriate surroundings. Same thing happens when we try to use (or rather abuse) animals in circuses and places like Seaworld. Try putting a human through the same confinement/caging, torture, hunger, demanding tricks and watch ur sons and daughters go through the same things.. Pretty sure I'd go blisteringly insane... :mad:

On a lighter note, if anyone here missed the big lion news a while ago, type "christian the lion" into google or YouTube. The world is a pretty amazing place, if we try to understand it rather than try to change it :upsidedow

yeah I heard this too, I guess these country bumpkins don't have a team of guys to go about the situation in a way not to kill them. Some of those animals were extinct...

Ok I will take a look at it and if I like it will spread the word to my nutty animal rescue friends and contacts. thanks BTW, I volunteer in animal rescue and foster sometimes but that site in my sig is not mine. I just promote it because it is the best site for people all over the country to find a pet to adopt. I do biz with them however.

Tranqs are for close up work, can miss, not guaranteed to work 100% and night was falling. If this happened in your neighborhood, would you want police to mess around with your safety like this?

Powerful rifle, bullet through the head and no problems. One fuck up with a tranquiliser dart. One child maimed or killed and the lawyers gather like pigs at the trough.
