Wow, the government worked efficiently for me!

Some of you may know my mom moved in with me about a month ago as she recovers from some health problems. For her to go to her doctor appointments she needs to take a wheelchair because she can't walk long distances yet. However, her wheelchair won't fit in either of my cars.

I did some looking and medical transports are a minimum of $140 per trip and her insurance doesn't cover it.

The town I live in has a local bus system with a few wheelchair accessible buses. I called them and asked for information. They sent out an application that I got within 48 hours. I filled it out and sent it back, they approved her and called me back within another 48 hours. The next day (today) the woman who runs the program actually came to my house, measured the wheelchair to make sure it was a compliant size then she sat down and explained how it worked, answered our questions and got everything set up. So long as her appointments are within a 20 mile radius the ride is free. I was impressed with how smooth it all went.

Awesome! Every decent city I have lived in had a similar service and people happily used it.

The reality is a good % of people in wheelchairs are on Social Security or disability and cannot afford transportation or a car as job options are much more limited even if they can work.

I am glad programs like these exist and they are taking good care of your Mom.

And that is why many people believe local government is most often a much better solution than federal government.

Wouldn't the easier solution be to get a folding wheelchair? Anyway good for you for taking care of mom :thumbsup

jk lol but really hope it works out for her. Public transit is cool when it works and isn't overran with garbage.

Actually she has a fold up chair. The problem is my car is small and it won't fit in the trunk and since it is a 2 door I can't get it into the back seat. My brother has a van and I thought about using it, but it is too high up off he ground and she can't get up in it.

True, but have you ever dealt with the government on anything substantial? I have been dealing a lot with them recently with her getting sick and getting switched around to medicare etc. Nothing goes smoothly and nothing goes quickly. I actually started this process now because she has a doctors appointment in two months so I figured I better get a head start on it. I had no idea it would be done in about a week.

Luckily this will be the short bus :) They tell us it can take 6 people max and I will be going with her to the appointment. If another wheelchair person gets out of line I can pimp slap em :winkwink:

Having recently dealt with medicare and social security stuff for her I can't imagine what a headache this would have been if it were handled at the federal level.
