i think before it was a hole that the ball would fall through it was a hole that they would use a broom or stick to pop the ball up (i think?)

1906-1891 = 15 years by my math.

Plus, in the early years it was just a lightly played, experimental game. The Wiki article says they didn't even sort out 5 man teams until 1897?1898 and the scoring was very low.
