Anyone set up a streaming radio station?

I pretty much know how it is done but need some advice on hardware.

Pretty much how to get the feed onto the net in the first place....

This is a 'real' station BTW that broadcasts on FM.

Google is throwing up all sorts of shit.

A good site would be great.

sandman! 11-01-2011 12:40 AM

any decent managed hosting provider can set this up for you.

Sorry, I was not really clear - Its early here!

Its more the hardware interface between the 'real' station and the internet that I am struggling with.

sandman! 11-01-2011 12:45 AM

you can setup something like shoutcast on a computer at the station that sends the music to the server which then sends it out over the internet to listeners.

anyone decent with a computer could probably set it up in less then an hour or 2.

I get that :).

How do I connect the feed from the 'real' station to the computer that feeds it to the server and the net?

I need some sort of 'sound in' hardware.... I think.....

DamianJ 11-01-2011 01:21 AM

You get a card that can pick up FM radio.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/dualtvmce.html

You get shoutcast.

There, 2 seconds on google. Tricky stuff!

Totally illegal I'd imagine, but there you go.

Not what I need - I will try to explain again later when my head is clearer....

Why illegal?

Or right. I thought you wanted a way to get FM radio into your PC.

And illegal because I was working on the assumption you were taking the FM without permission. My bad if this is not the case.

so man, that fm radio station is yours? you have access to the studio? if yes, there must be some output like jack, you put that jack into line in input in your computer, start winamp with shoutcast on that computer and you are broadcasting online! but, there are some laws and if you are broadcasting online, you are paying some legal fees, so best way is to find service where they are paying the feew for more stations so they are sharing them so it is not that expensive ... shame i cannot find any provider now in that useless google shit after all that panda updates ... but, there is much more to know if you want to make it legal, if you dont care about fees and so, shoutcast is your fastest way ... and, fees are in every country other, so check your locals ... have luck! :thumbsup

Thanks - You seem to have the idea.....

The station is a fully legal FM broadcaster and pays all the relevant fees etc.

The more thought I put into it - I was only hit with this last night - the easier it sounds.

It seems a good sound card and a descent server is all that is needed - Plus the software of course.

CurrentlySober 11-01-2011 03:11 AM

i cant afford to set up a streaming radio station... :(

You have to pay additional fees to stream online.

1. The owner of the station has been in that biz for more than 20 years. I guess he knows what needs to be paid and to who.

2. What you said earlier was not even close.

Let's hope so, because you certainly don't have a fucking clue. I do hope he isn't paying you to do this.

And it's *whom.

So you don't need a card to receive the FM and then run shoutcast? Oh, my bad, I thought that's exactly what you needed. Do you use magic?

You're funny!

seeandsee 11-01-2011 07:09 AM

http://www.shoutcast.com/

if you want in air transmit, its probably illegal..

Complete this sentence in less than 100 words:

Adding a card that receives FM then using shout cast to stream the FM received would't work because...

It would work, just. - I think I asked for a direct hardware interface though - More than once.

Good sound card for the Input Port and Appropriate software to control it

Si 11-01-2011 10:05 AM

Damian stop my stomach is hurting!

Basically, you need a good sound card!

This is one I am looking at: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...744&CatId=4491

Not sure where you are but if you can find one of them, or something similar with proper inputs (not a mic line) then you shouldn't have any problems with clarity.

I've tried mic lines to my laptop and pc for recording my music and they are not really any good.

Run a line-out from whatever the station is using to the PC/Laptop whatever.

Then you need something to stream with, which I don't know about myself.

And like others have said, probably some legal BS to get it online.

What on earth do you think a card is? It IS a direct hardware interface.

Really, are you being paid to do this work?

Hehehe.

Agreed. Appalling. Probably the lowest priced component in any PC. 50 cent part or 400 quid card. Which will be better. :)

And if this dog character, if that is his real name, wants quality, then go optical.

Your suggestion was.....

'You get a card that can pick up FM radio.'

Si 11-01-2011 10:24 AM

Just found this you may find useful. Just quickly glanced over it, looks like one way you could do it.

Guess again. You're not allowed to take FM broadcasts and re-broadcast them on the Internet or anywhere else. The station pays the license fees for the re-broadcast rights, not you. You would be breaking the law if you did this.

Google search for "How do I setup an Internet Radio Station" and you'll find plenty of legal ways to do this that include legal content, proper licenses etc. No extra hardware required on your end.

He's not, he has already said that this is a proper station that wants to broadcast online.
