50 car graveyard deep in a German forest

link
Most people think Michael Fröhlich, a classic car dealer from Dusseldorf, is a bit mental. Which is perfectly reasonable. He looks like a cross between Uri Geller and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tanned, smiling and self-assured, he's in the classic car business for decades.

The man's a collector himself too, but not as we know it. His daily driver gives a hint to his perversion - it' a fire-damaged Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow with a new drivetrain and suspension setup, but the body sgtill wears its, umm, "patina".

I visited a location that had "old car" marked on a map and found a graveyard with cars from the 1950s and 1960s. There were at least 30. I ran into the owner and she told me the cars had been sitting there since the 1980s. One had a mature tree growing through its engine bay.

I visited a couple of times then left it and sort of forgot about it, discovered a few years later that they'd all been cleared away. :(

Some awesome relics!

Kind of a neat place and looks like a great spot for a photo shoot.

First dibs on the VW splitty, i'll also accept the three wheeler (a messerschmitt?) and is that an early 60's beetle behind the blue pickup on the right in the fiirst picture?

There's a junk yard with about 30 of these not too far from me. All lined up next to each other facing the road. Quite interesting.

TeenCat 11-01-2011 12:03 PM

fuck that is a great piece of forest! man hat off for your style! :thumbsup

_Richard_ 11-01-2011 12:04 PM

car graveyards are the coolest shit ever

there is a few in the outback of bc.. you can walk around them for a long time

lots of money if you're appropriately located as well

seeandsee 11-01-2011 12:15 PM

this could be tourist attraction, just land some expensive cars too

Evil Chris 11-01-2011 12:24 PM

They all look worthless. The ones you can see, anyway.

you're not much of a classic car expert, are you? :winkwink:

i've seen cars rebuilt from much worse conditions than those and the Volkswagen Bus alone is about $40-$50K if properly restaurated.

Gabriel 11-01-2011 01:08 PM

I'll take the 356

They call them junkyards here in the US.. It's rare though to find them with classic cars are that aren't picked to the bones. I always love looking at old shit like that, specially if it's like the day it was left.

We should go into business if they will pay that much over there.

if you know where to find them - especially the first version with the split front window and the so called "Samba" with the small windows in the roof - and you can get them cheap - we should indeed ;)

MaDalton 11-01-2011 03:20 PM

in case no one believes me..

Volkswagen T1 Samba

62,000 EUR = $85,000 USD

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqQOKjo...Js!Ew~~_19.JPG

has to be in top condition though for those prices

this is beyond restauration point .

I used to collect antiques, but only ragtops ... My worst buy was a Lincoln Zephyr 1939 convertible ... got it shipped from Huntington Beach California, to Plattsburgh, NYl .

Then, towed from Plattsburgh to my front yard ( used to live in a farm area ) . Next morning, cops stops and offered to get it removed, as they tought someone had dumped the scrap on my property.

I never restored it, just sold it as is and lost a few K ...

this could be a long discussion :1orglaugh

some cars are rebuilt up to a point where you have to ask which parts are still original - besides the 10 square centimeters of metal that carry the identification number. but i have seen much worse examples than the Porsche.

but it only makes sense of course if the result is worth something, wouldnt do that with a Gremlin or Pacer :upsidedow :1orglaugh

I have several German friends that I met back in the 80's. They would come here, buy bikes and cars, crate them up and ship them back home. One time, a German "customs" officer told one of my friends, "Americans must really love you coming there and buying all their junk."

SomeCreep 11-01-2011 03:54 PM

I bet those cars are home to hundreds of spiders.

Cars can't die, silly.

I've seen much worse restored. Anything connected to early porsche and early aircooled VWs are big money - many restorers over here would kill for that car.

I never claimed to be, but I know this much: a re-built car will never fetch a fraction of what an original will bring. The cars I see in those pics aren't likely worth more than their weight in scrap metal. They certainly have seen their fair share of the elements over the decades.
