Do you have a favourite movie soundtrack ??

And if so which one ?

Was talking about this with my gf a while ago when we were watching random YouTube vids, and we ended up digging up some old classics from various movie soundtracks.

Everyone usually has a favourite movie, or song, but i can't think of anything that i would regard as my fave soundtrack to a movie.

:upsidedow

Ahoy! I think Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack is amazing. Loved that one for years.

Also recommend Lalo Schiffrin "Dirty Harry" score which is outstanding as are many of his others.

The James Brown and Curtis Mayfield blackploitation movie soundtracks are amazing too... Superfly, Black Caesar, etc.

Fight Club has a great soundtrack too worth checking out.

SykkBoy 11-03-2011 01:01 PM

River's Edge
Repo Man
Repo: The Genetic Opera (does that count since the movie is a musical?)
Dudes

RebelR 11-03-2011 01:04 PM

Uncle Buck had a good one, Most Tarantino films are always good, The Commitments was great.. and then most John Hughes flicks are great. But really no clear favorite.

I second that, the Hackers soundtrack was amazing...I thought it was a great movie too, corny, but great, and Angelina Jolie looked so damn hot in it! Can't go wrong with a sneak titty shot of her hehe.

All excellent choices -- I was listening to Superfly on the way in to the office this morning, actually.

Speaking of Eastwood, just about anything Ennio Morricone touched in the 'spaghetti western' vein is great, too.

Judgement night is pretty good too, especially the Ice-T/SLAYER duo

O Brother is another great soundtrack, got me on a bluegrass binge for several months afterwards

Currently re-listening to Queen of the Damned because it's so awesome.

Amadeus rocks.

The Sting with all that Scott Joplin is one of my favorites of all time.

Also this French movie with Jean Paul Belmondo called "L'Animal" (with Raquel Welch) has memorable string quartets and hideous 70's disco themes.

:D

I don't generally listen to soundtracks, unless I am in a specific mood.

Nonetheless, I would say my favorite soundtracks are simply concert albums, such as Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same", and the Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense"), or straightforward musicals such as "Sound of Music" and "Porgy and Bess" (I love Gershwin music).

Most of the Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtracks are great fun to listen to, including "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Cats", and "Phantom of the Opera", as they all feature great standalone songs and music.

The problem with most soundtracks to me, is that they are often designed as background or incidental music, or are composed to artificially exaggerate emotional moments, so they can sound overly-crafted or contrived when taken as a whole. That's why I feel that those composers most steeped in classical music, and trained to write complete musical scores, are better at their craft than someone hired to specifically construct music around a movie.

Examples of this type of composer would be John Barry, "Born Free", and 11 James Bond films including, "Goldfinger", "You Only Live Twice", "Diamonds Are Forever", and "View to a Kill", and Oscar Hammerstein, "The King and I" and "Flower Drum Song".

Among the younger generation of soundtrack composers, I really like Danny Elfman's work.

The biggest musical disappointments in my memory were the film adaptation soundtracks for "Tommy" and "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band".

In general - I agree - big distinction between a score and a soundtrack especially nowadays where movies are basically just stuffed with a few tunes to sell a greatest hits record that will appeal to xyz demographic...

However, the ones mentioned previously, like Dylan on Pat Garrett, while it might have produced a hit like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door, still is really a score that is very appealing apart from the effect it has on truly enhancing the dramatic arch.

Another great one comes to mind along those lines...

Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" from The Exorcist.

Pretty much any Scorcese mob flick has a good soundtrack: Casino, Mean Streets, Goodfellas

Natural Born Killers was good, Trent Reznor usually does good film scores.

Trainspotting was pretty good.

AlfalfaReborn 11-04-2011 02:03 PM

The soundtrack for Platoon was damn good

Evil Chris 11-04-2011 02:21 PM

Yeah I really liked the Sigur Ros The Nothing Song on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack and Jolie was HOT in Hackers, healthy looking. Johnny Lee Miller was at his prime smokin hot!
