i have a question

a lot of people have accidents(machinery, traffic, bomb) where they have an arm or leg severed or blown off, when I was a kid and there were lots of WWII and even WWI vets around i'd see lots of them missing an arm or leg. people seem to survive losing an entire arm or leg YET when people want to commit suicide they just slit their wrist and die?

cherrylula 11-08-2011 07:31 AM

um, depends on how much blood is lost... that is what causes death. :2 cents:

i cant afford to have any questions... :(

Picture a high pressure hose with water squirting out the end.
Cut the hose in half, severing it, and the same amount of water comes out the new end.
Now picture slitting the hose lengthwise, so now instead of a hose it's a trough. A lot more will come out. Same with blood vessels. If you cut it off, there's still just the little hole in the end for blood to come out. If you slit in lengthwise at the wrist, a lot more blood comes out.

Also of course quick medical attention to stop the bleeding makes a big difference.

Most missing arms and legs are amputated by a professional in the hospital. At the time of the injury the limb may be crrushd or damaged without loosing too much blood yet.

When you go through basic training in the military you spend a lot of time learning first aid. One of the main things soldiers are taught is how to apply a tourniquet. As battle wounds are usually severe you are trained to stop the flow of blood quickly to save a life. The downside is that once you do that, the limb is history.

its a very difficult way to kill yourself. i remember reading a thing in college (i was a psych major) that there is less than a 5% success rate this way

The low success rate is because it's not an instant process and the person has a lot of time to change their mind and decide they don't really want to commit suicide after all.

Machinery, traffic, bomb victims often have other people around to save them. Suicides tend to do it hidden away alone.

Still had enough in him he lived. Interesting part, you could tell every heart beat, as the flow squirted out.

When people want to die they cut their wrists and let blood run out. When people don't want to die they fucking do everything to stop the bleeding. are you serious? you're not seriously asking this question. Some people survive after being shot in the head.

calvinawe 11-09-2011 02:13 AM

chances are, when they got their limbs blown off, they were immediately taken care of to prevent fatal blood loss, don't you think? :) if your artery leaks and not treated on the go, you lose much blood.

and it depends where in the head they get shot - get shot and sever a major artery and you're not surviving long.

if you're a soldier and get hit by some incendiary device and your arm blows off or you step on a landmine and your leg blow off - isn't blood just gushing out like a geyser? how long can you stay alive before medical help arrives?

half an hour? that would be a ridiculous way to kill yourself - you'd have to get up and go to the bathroom while you're waiting to die, or go off to the kitchen for a snack.

That's why most soldiers die and only a few vets survived who got medical help in time or had someone who helped them stop the bleeding

they say it's less painfool. you just get weaker and it's like falling asleep (you won't be able to go off to the kitchen for a snack) that's why it's so popular. better than falling from skyscraper of stuff like that

Mutt 11-09-2011 03:25 AM

nothing can be an easier way to go than pills. the people that do it more violently are angry at somebody or at the world in general and want to make a point on the way out the door so to speak.
