This end to Joe Paterno's career is so tragic
I've watched this guy on the sidelines coaching Penn State my entire life, and that's pretty long. I remember watching a TV movie of the week when I was a kid called Something for Joey, a true story about a boy dying of leukemia whose hero was a Penn State Heisman Trophy winning player. Paterno was depicted in the movie as a great guy. And he was and is, Joe Paterno was like the Dad and later a Grandpa most wished they had. At 83 he is still the head coach of Penn State, players love him, the students of Penn State love him, the people of Pennsylvannia love him. And now............... he will forever have his reputation tarnished by a child sex abuse scandal and be looked at as a man who allowed many children to have their lives ruined by a child molestor.
i keep hoping there's a way or explanation to excuse Paterno's actions or lack thereof but it doesn't look like there is one. Paterno will be forced out, and he'll probably die much sooner than he would have. |

He just became the coach with the most wins in his division - a record that is unlikely to ever be broken. Plus, his health has him now coaching from the box. Perhaps it's time for him for him to retire anyway.
He's an icon, there's no denying that. It would be nice if the decision to hang up the whistle was his to make. |

The 23-Page Grand Jury report makes it pretty clear that people knew what was going on, and that there was a cover-up.
Check out the title on the cover of the biography for the accused ex-Asst Coach: http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lu...63qpo1_500.png :helpme I feel bad for Coach Paterno, but even worse for the victims. :2 cents: ADG |

I thought the initial reports said he filed complaints with the proper people when he hear possible abuse was going on and was clear of wrong doing?

i want to defend Paterno, of all the people in this disaster, he is the least to blame. It's unclear what exactly he was told by the graduate student, I believe Paterno when he says he never heard there was anal sex, what he was told was 'horsing around' and 'inappropriate' touching - when a 57 year old man is inappropriately touching a young boy it doesn't matter if anal or oral sex is going on, something very bad, a crime, is going on. Paterno turned the matter over to his superiors. So what was Joe Paterno to do, he's the head football coach at Penn State, he reported what he knew and I assume he believed his superiors would do the right thing. Should he have continued to check with his superiors to find out what was going on? Should he have called the police and said 'i'm Joe Paterno, i had a graduate assistant report he saw an ex-coach of mine and a boy 'horsing around' inappropriately in a shower over here at the football building, I reported it to my bosses at Penn State but I don't trust them to do the right thing so that's why I'm calling you'? |

The AD did nothing about it, but help cover it up and Paterno never followed up. Once he realized that nothing was going to be done he could have gone to the police himself or at the very least he could have fired Sandusky, but he did nothing. It was almost like he didn't want to know what was going on and hoped it would just go away. |
Fucking Sandusky that bastard molesting boys :(
|
If only he had been a coach for a catholic school, this would have been no problem....

the only thing Paterno can be blamed for is not following up and not sure that's fair - you'd expect that the President of a major university and the Athletic Director to whom he reported what he knew would do the right thing. what people and the media are trying to pin on Paterno is why this didn't play on his mind, you hear that a 57 year old man is playing around naked with a boy in the shower and you report it to your superiors but you don't ever ask yourself at any point later 'gee, i wonder what happened, did they report it to the police, is Sandusky going to be arrested? i need to find out just in case my bosses are going to sweep this under the carpet'. if you read the Grand Jury report, Sandusky had been investigated more than once about his inappropriate behaviour with other young boys by the cops and nothing was done even though there was lots of evidence of what he was up to - including a phone recording of a very creepy phone conversation with the mother of a boy he had put the moves on in a shower where a guilt ridden, or maybe fake guilt ridden Sandusky, tell the mother 'I should be dead'. |
You report shit like this to the fucking police. not presidents or student aids or any of that shit. THE FUCKING POLICE.

I am a PA girl and one of the few in my family not to have gone to Penn State. A life size cut out of Joe is at every Thanksgiving. Even without going to the school (though I did apply and get in..family required I applied) Joe is almost like family. I agree this is so tragic as it appears as a spot on his legacy simply by getting caught in the crossfire.

its a huge deal here, living in central PA its all over the news. sad and tragic way to go out, if it wasnt for this incident, they would of easily made a bronze statue of him to put in front of the school :(

this all started LAST friday, less than a week ago but people feel that Joe, along with the others should of a) never let this happen and b) called the police immediately. there is a lot of speculation that they all knew this was going on and was a cover up. two of the other coaches supposedly were told about this prior and didn't notify the police or authorities |
Doesn't matter at this point even if he is 100% cleared of any wrongdoing. The news is out there and in the court of public opinion, his name is now tarnished.

In the meantime, 100s of Catholic priests have molested kids, and it has been actively covered up by the entire worldwide authority structure of the church.... and where are all the jail sentences? Obviously the catholic school idea would work much better for the coach, wouldn't you agree? . |
He went from being a legend to being a few notches below a pornographer. He deserves his disgrace. Those kids will be fucked up for life and some will probably eventually victimize kids when they are adults. He did not notify police?!!!! Who the fuck does Paterno think he is? The Pope?

perhaps we should talk about some hasidic jewish scandals? |
not a whole lotta media coverage on those scandals
i wonder why |
After reading the report I actually want to throw up. And to think the University covered it up to save face. Pathetic.....

Someone is thinking of the children. I'm glad.

It's too bad that Paterno is going out on such a bad note.
|
Sad when you see an entire college administration act like you would expect a couple of teens to act. Lets hide this from our parents instead of receiving accolades for actually doing something about it!

He could have won a million games and it wouldn't matter. . Dude didn't turn in a child molester to authorities. Slappies satin poor Joe need to be forced to suck and old mans unwashed cock while t-bagging his colostomy bag. Anyone with any sympathy with Penn state better hide your kid away. Karma is a bitch.

According to the indictment, in 2002 a Penn State graduate assistant - now-assistant coach Mike McQueary[15] - walked in on a ten-year-old boy being subjected to anal intercourse by Sandusky in the Lasch Football Building on the Penn State campus.
Although Penn State prohibited Sandusky from bringing boys onto the main campus in 2002, Sandusky was allowed to operate a summer camp under his name from 2002 to 2008 at a satellite campus near Erie where he had daily contact with boys from fourth grade to high school.[17] |

This shows the brainwashin that goes on at universities, especially the big football programs. All the first guy to report and Joe did was pass it up re chain of command where they knew the university would "handle it" and then it would be off of their consciences. Stupid fucking people still wanting to cut Joe slack. U disgust me. |

jesus....just skimmed through the Grand Jury report, shit is so fucked up. many more heads are gonna roll this is not going to go away anytime soon. |
Worse part of this whole thing - Jerry Sandusky isn't in jail as I type this.
|
I feel sick to my stomach every time I think about this... How these people could ignore these crimes and not protect those children is beyond me! All of those people should be punished, I don't care how many damn football games they've won...

He should get in trouble for that if he knew and he didn't do anything about it. By the same token, authorities in the catholic church are NOT getting in trouble for knowing about, and deliberately covering up, child molesters in their ranks. Therefore, if he was a cardinal, and the assistant coach was a priest, he would not get in trouble. That was my ironic joke. I'm not talking about the molesters themselves. Do you guys really have that much trouble following the logic here, or are you only concerned with attacking jews? I think child molesters should be executed, no matter what religion, race, or position in life, and I think that any person in a position of authority over that molester, who knows about it and does nothing, or actively engages in covering up the crime, and enabling the child molester continued access to children, should go to jail. If it happens within a company, people in authority knowingly covering this kind of thing up would go to jail. With perhaps thousands of instances in the Catholic church, NO ONE in authority, who was actively involved in covering up, and enabling child molesters, has gone to Jail. I guess I didn't realize that you guys were Catholic, and I offended you. I apologize for that. . |

Like Bossku said up above, living in central PA, I am flooded with stories on this. Every news story everywhere is about this scandal. Here's a great op-piece I found on Paterno's retirement:
http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-foo..._lnk3%7C111273 I think the writer hit it head on. What saddens me is the mentality of the people in the comments, and sadly that represents a lot of the people in this area. "Joe didn't do anything wrong. He did what he was supposed to do." Because they're such big PSU supporters, they look at this whole thing with their Penn State blinders on, and only see "JoePa" as a football god who can do no wrong. They can't objectively look at the entire case, and image if it was their 10 year child, and finding out that JoePa had known about the possibilty of Sundasky being a pedophile for years, and then see if Paterno's actions would satisfy them. The other big defense of Paterno they throw out there is that the AG isn't pursuing him. But if they had paid attention during the press conference the other day, the Attorney General said that "Joe Paterno is not a target of our investigation at this time." I would imagine if they find good evidence that a cover up did occur, Paterno will be facing charges as well. Right now, other than Sandusky, the two others facing charges are simply perjury charges. Nothing related to a cover up, YET. Another side note, I read someone point out that the results of the three year grand jury investigation and subsequent charges weren't announced until the week after Paterno reached 409 wins, setting the record for most wins in NCAA Division I football (which occurred 10/29/11; AG report and Sandusky arrest 11/5/11). Coincidence? At this point, I can't help but wonder... |

It serves the pious old goat right.
Paterno used to publicly rail against Barry Switzer and Jackie Sherill for their "lack of integrity". What's worse, giving an inner city kid a couple bucks for a meal or covering up for a pedophile? |
