GFY MMA Cage Match, UFC-Style?

I know we have a number of amateur MMA fighters on GFY, myself included. I've challenged Mark from GTS to a cage match to settle an outstanding $38k debt, but if he doesn't pick up the gauntlet, would anyone be interested in putting together a GFY fight card at one of the shows?

WarChild 11-09-2011 11:12 AM

Good luck getting that sanctioned and insured.

We'd just fight on a regular promotion's card. It's not a big deal -- when a bunch of our team all fights on the same card, they make a special event for it. Two fights before my last heavyweight title fight was a card exactly like that. They even named it after the team itself, which was pretty cool.

edgeprod 11-09-2011 11:17 AM

Plus, with how hard it is to attract amateur (read: unpaid) fighters to promotions sometimes, it'd be a godsend for them to get participants who come with ready-made opponents.

FUBAR would have to add in a video section to their site, to cover this properly.

Pay per view. :D

Haha, that'd be funny.

Let's start with just one fight. Anyone in FL (or capable of traveling to Florida) want to do a GFY brawl? I'm open to opponents, and already have my sponsor locked in. You'd just need yours (or fight for the glory of it), and I'll get us on a card. I can also do VA -- I've worked with a promotion there that is very well organized.

That's the hope -- that it'd be interesting, and a good way to blow off steam. If one of the GFY keyboard warriors would step up, it'd probably be a well-attended event. :winkwink:

Isn't Kimbo Slice in the Florida area? I'm sure he's game. :thumbsup

I'm going to have to pass on that once, since A) he's a professional and I'm an amateur, and B) I'm not willing to die for this experiment.

Guy who posts here under the name Ordo runs an MMA association, and broadcasts on PPV.

He could probably point you in the right direction.

Awesome. Now we just need some fighters. I'll throw my hat into the ring. I only have a few scheduled fights in 2012, so I have room for more.

I'd be interested. What weight classes? I've actually dropped down from 260 to walking weight of 225 now, so would be in the 205 with the cut. This would also put a fire under my ass to get back into training. I've been out 3 months due to absolute laziness.

I'm comfortable from 186-260, but compete most in the 186 and 205 classes. My last heavyweight fight (a championship fight) was a completely one-sided 30-second loss.

TheSenator 11-09-2011 12:29 PM

I can have a jiu-jitsu or no-gi grappling match.

You can turn an MMA match into that if you shoot and get control. :winkwink: Or try to, at least.

Let's get something setup. I'm working a project with the guy who trained Eddie Bravo to beat Royler Gracie and he's brought up training me for a fight.

Awesome. Do you have a current MMA record? If you put me in touch with your manager, I can send a press kit and some video for you to scout. I'm only 6-3, so there shouldn't be a sanctioning problem even if you're 0-0.

Oh, shit, you're Asian. This is going to be as easy as smuggling some dental floss into the cage for me to win, and you avoiding my goldfish eyes for you to win. Sounds like a fair match!

HAHAHAHAHA, I already got one fucked up left eye from my first MMA match I lost back in 2007. Won't need much floss!

Sweet, that'll save me some money. My last match ended like this, so my eye issues might have you beat:

Damn, neck brace and all! I can't find a bigger pic, but this is me the day after.

Yep, they carried me out of the cage right to the hospital. It was a terrible loss. I remember that pic of you after that fight.

I got the fucked up eyelid from a different fight (which I won, luckily), but this one definitely didn't help, LOL.

Would be cool to do.

Where? Vegas??

Spunky 11-09-2011 01:28 PM

I think a sword fight would be more entertaining

Mike Honcho 11-09-2011 01:32 PM

I'm game for a random opponent or anyone for that matter.

BJJ Blue belt, Maui Thai, Boxing & High school wrestling.

Wherever. At a show would be fine, as long as there was an amateur promotion going on at the same time.

I trained at Wolfpack BJJ in Sarasota, FL. I boxed at the YMCA as a kid and have always continued my training. I went to BKK for 2 weeks and had about 5 private lessons and have also continued training. I wrestled in High School, never took it seriously, but placed in states.

6'2 250 right now, but could be 205 in a month and a half.

So far we have 3 of us, you, me and Edgeprod at the 205 class. We're gonna need more people!

I've got 4 years in BJJ, blue, missed my purple testing 2 months back, I stopped training a month or more before. Few years of Muay Thai, and Judo. Trained at American Top Team Main academy for 2 years and then ATT Wellington. I'm 6'1 228lbs as of 5 minutes ago. 205 won't be a hard cut for me.

HammerALL 11-09-2011 02:21 PM

I'd be down for sure. I am getting ready for NAGA here in December. I can get down to 205 as well.

NAGA is very good shit. They have a full-contact MMA-style promotion as well .. or at least they did when I last checked.

HammerALL 11-09-2011 02:33 PM

It's still up on their site - this is just the grappling tourney and it's part of the MMA expo that's coming to town here at the end of the year. Should draw some good ground competitors.

Fuck, Mario is in too! This is great! I've been loosing the urge to train for the past year, and this is what was needed to get it going again.

Are you aware that there's a fight club in Silicon Valley that actually does just that? They have all sorts of odd and off-the-wall gladiatorial matches. Full contact, people get hurt all the time. It looks like a blast.

Vendzilla 11-09-2011 09:27 PM

I'm just above 300 right now, I'm willing to take on a couple of my haters at once, just don't make me wear those silly gloves.

fuzebox 11-09-2011 09:52 PM

I am a couple pounds over 205 but wouldn't be competitive at that weight :(

Honestly, if I lived in the states, i'd go along for a laugh. This could be a great way to close the divide between people on here.

I can cut to 205, but it would have to be one round - I'm to old for any more than 5 minutes!

On second thought, I'm a lover, not a fighter.... but I'd pay to watch!

My best friend from High School just went pro this year at 44. He's 2/1/0. But if you want something bad enough, you will do it.
