Am i gettting ripped off? Software developer opinion/question

I just purchased an out of the box CMS software (sry no names) and just looking for opinions as i feel im getting the short end of the stick because the developer is billing me for what i see as a obvious mistake/bug on their part.

Basically they delivered the software with the user interface (php) littered with 100s of references another companies brand ie their last clients install and some of those references cant be changed by client because they are in flash.

Now, Ive paid very well for the software and also paid well for the annual support package and now they want to bill to change the items in the flash that should take all of 30 minutes and is an issue that was the developers sloppy work in the first place.

This was their reply to my inquiring why i would be billed for this.
Programming = man hours. Man hours, as you know, cost money. If they are not compensated by the client, it is a loss. We are not in the business of losing programming man hours. :321GFY

I get that in most circumstances as i do dev work as well but didnt i already pay for this type of thing in my original purchase and or monthly support package?

They sound like assholes.

I will only comment about it taking 30 minutes :

Everything takes longer than that.

BIGTYMER 11-11-2011 11:07 PM

Post the product name.

marlboroack 11-11-2011 11:11 PM

You need to give the software's name if this is what you really think.

i would have sent it back for a refund. Thats just horrible service.

in most cases I agree , as stated i do dev work as well so i get this BUT this is simply changing out the OLD CLIENT NAME for MY NAME in the flash.

BSleazy 11-11-2011 11:33 PM

That doesn't sound like any out of the box software I've ever heard of.

It's pretty standard to change the Flash text to your own company name when you buy website templates.

Indian programmers will do it for under $50. Don't sweat the small stuff

right, me neither.

i thought it was more established company than it was.

no established company would deliver product like that and bill to change it.

IMO its a laughable money grab.

you misunderstand, i cant as i dont have the flash source and its not a $50 template its $10000+ application so not exactly "little shit" as you put it.

It's a wise man who gets feedback to double check his own point of view, and does so without causing unnecessary drama naming names.

Something isn't right with that if it's one of the popular CMS systems.
It sounds to me like they are misunderstanding what you're referring to or something. That or perhaps the "references to a previous client's brand" actually aren't quite what you think they are or something.

I say that because hearing your point of view, it sounds like they are being total dicks. The dicks selling CMS systems went out of business though. Running through all the major CMS vendors, that seems out of character for all them whom I know, and I know most of them.

Since you are soliciting feedback, if you care to let one objective industry veteran see the details before naming names publicly, I'd be glad to take a look. I'm a little curious where the communication break down or what ever occurred.

Sounds like they fucked you once and enjoyed it so much they want seconds.

$10000+ and they won't take 5 minutes to change some company name without charging more money for programming. Something isn't right.

American Psycho 11-12-2011 12:05 AM

oops misquoted a previous reply meant "small stuff"

ThunderBalls 11-12-2011 12:13 AM

I'd be pissed spending that much cashola if someone pulled that, especially if it wasnt custom code.

They are not one of the top tier, as i already work with most of the other popular systems, i think they are trying but missing the mark in a number of ways.
Top tier companies wouldnt deliver product like this and then bill to fix it or they would get slammed on the boards.

You are correct there was a communication break down.
Shortly after they installed the system my entire host (not server) REALITY CHECK went totally down and i lost the fresh install and took months for me to get back on track with all my other projects so they did a fresh install months later and since then nearly everything that wasnt working and there was lots even after the fresh install was labeled as "your teams fault" by developer.

This is exactly what i hope/expect to avoid when i pay well for something.
