what a racket - what's the most expensive suit you own?

what's the most you've paid for a mens suit?

it's a racket - a bunch of cloth sewed together. even a very high quality suit, what would the cloth/material cost - 100 dollars?

cherrylula 11-16-2011 07:35 AM

Actually fine fabric is usually pretty expensive, easily $50 yd and up depending. And you probably need a good 4-5 yards, plus lining fabric and other things that go into it. Plus a huge quality difference if it is mass produced in a factory vs. hand tailored and sewn.

why a cheap suit is a cheap suit. lol

PR_Glen 11-16-2011 07:35 AM

but kinda like cars though.. you aren't paying for the steel... its what they do with it...

Paul Markham 11-16-2011 07:37 AM

The cost of the cloth is a very small part of the total cost. A lot of skilled labor goes into making a quality suit. Then retail mark up.

For a quality well made suit today, without paying for a designer label. $1,000 would not be out of bounds.

Michael O 11-16-2011 07:38 AM

Last time I bought a suit I paid $200 from a tailor made with 3 fittings suit and 2 shirts.
I know everything is getting so expensive.

ClickCastX 11-16-2011 07:39 AM

That's why I'd rather go out with a wife beater and jeans.

grumpy 11-16-2011 07:59 AM

i pay 4.500 uk pounds for a suit. Handmade.

It really depends on the material, but suits usually cost a litte more to manufacture. My friends company makes suits for Saks 5th Ave label. Costs them about 175 or so to make
The suits. They sell them in bulk for about 300-350, Saks sells them for 800-900 or so.

These are usually Super 150- Super 160. I have some custom super 190's for about 750-1k depending on cut and materials. Which is pretty cheap for that level.

Sadly, that's not even a suit.

VikingMan 11-16-2011 09:22 AM

I have a suit coat in camo. Paid $99 for it. True story

Dirty D 11-16-2011 10:27 AM

Awesome thread.
I bet 90% of GFY people don't even have a proper suit.

Custom Italian 3 piece suits is how I roll when a suit is called for.
Each suit has perfectly matching shoes, cufflinks, and hat to make a complete ensemble.

You pay for a brand, otherwise you should pay 20$ for Air jordans.

MrBottomTooth 11-16-2011 11:42 AM

I have one of those fake tuxedos with the tie and stuff dyed into the front.

cost more with flight and everything, so order more then one, extra pair of pants is around 1500, two times back for finishing touches. 7 months til its ready.

ruff 11-16-2011 01:34 PM

You're gonna love the way you look, I guarantee it. But in case you don't, you need to bop on over to Hong Kong and spend no less than a thousand US for a decent suit. You only need one, I guarantee it. You're going to need shoes too.

Si 11-16-2011 01:43 PM

I paid about $250 for my Ralph Lauren jacket, didn't buy the trousers. Prefer Jeans.

If you go somewhere like Topman, Moore's JsoABank (however you spell it) You should be paying too much for good quality stuff.

baddog 11-16-2011 01:46 PM

I have a connection in the garment district of LA. I should be embarrassed about the deals he gives me, but I am not.

You are Jeremy Clarkson, and I claim my 5 pounds :upsidedow

LeRoy 11-16-2011 02:31 PM

lol

Call me a cheap bastard!

I paid 199.00 for 3 suits and I still wear them. Came with socks, belts. ties and shirts :)

Wore one to my last interview and I landed a fine job with DTI Cash. Damm just looked and I'm wearing one of the slacks right now lol

FTW

LAJ 11-16-2011 02:32 PM

I have several suits that just sit in my closet. I don't think half of them fit me anymore.

I can count on both hands the number of times I've worn a suit in the last 10 years. Twice a year is a lot for me lol. I think the most i've ever paid is like $700 when in actuality, my favorite two suits are vintage from the 1950s that I found at $80 each.

I don't own a suit and probably never will. Lifestyle choice I guess. If you can't have me in the boardroom wearing a Hawaiian shirt and Dickies, I probably don't want to work with you, and you probably don't want to work with me.

mineistaken 11-18-2011 01:49 PM

I don't understand people who can never wear suits. Its fun to wear it sometimes. At least once in two years or something. Its just decent clothing :)

You would fail a battle rap with Dirty D miserably.

Please post a picture of your fine self in a suit.
I am sure we can come up with an animal that you resemble.

Coup 11-18-2011 02:31 PM

Proud to say that I have never worn one.

Oh but I DO want to work you and all adult webmasters!

It is fun to wear a bad ass suit on occasion, but only when it is called for.
(Which is rare in Florida!)

I am wearing flannel lounge pants and a TampaBukkake.com Tshirt right now ;)

Ross 11-18-2011 02:34 PM

Very rarely wear a suit, last one I bought was for my grandmas funeral, black three piece suit, cost me about $350.

I do want to buy a nice Hugo Boss or Armani suit tho, but I need to drop another 15-20 pounds before I'd spend that kind of money on one.

jimmycooper 11-18-2011 02:46 PM

The most I've ever spent was $2K for a Helmut Lang, but most of the others have been in the $700-1000 range. I like Tiger Of Sweden.

Last ones I got were made in Germany ...?

TheDoc 11-18-2011 03:00 PM

I got my one and only suit from Nordstrom, suit, shoes, tie, cuff links, etc... they tailor at Nordstrom as well. I think it cost around $1800 for everything. I've worn it once.

fuzebox 11-18-2011 04:12 PM

I like to wear a suit to go out at night... Why not, being well dressed can be fun. There's a difference between wearing a suit because you have to and because you want to :2 cents:

Mutt 11-18-2011 04:15 PM

to the guys who don't own a suit - what if somebody in your family dies? you go to a funeral in jeans or sweatpants? or a wedding?

InfoGuy 11-18-2011 04:46 PM

Brioni $4K+

marlboroack 11-18-2011 07:22 PM

There is nothing to be proud of. If you did not have at least one occasion where suit was needed I feel pity for you :)

Labor cost + material cost? Thats very low even in the poor country. Unless you had it done for free by a friend or something like that.

Chris 11-19-2011 08:16 AM

i wore one at my wedding
it was around 700
dunno the name
donated it to goodwill

In most cases, unless I'm getting my picture taken at a formal service, I would have nice jeans and a nice shirt on and that's only because I wouldn't want to hear the shit from everyone if I showed up in cargo's and flip flops.
