Another fantastic job by the police. This 84 year old jobless loon was obviously causing trouble and didn't have a simple little message that even morons could understand so she deserved the pepper spray to the face. :thumbsup

My favorite part was from the comment from the police:
I agree with the OWS message but not they way they are going about it. I also think they are forcing police into bad circumstances. But that comment is seriously fucked up.

Their message is a big vague, but clearly the banks have fucked us. They fucked us so bad that they bet against us - and made a profit from that too.

Occupying a park outside of Wall Street and bitching the at the banks isn't gonna change a thing. This needs to be directed at Washington DC, who for the most part has ignored this.

BTW, I read an article today that 47% of Congress are multi-millionaries. That's the 1% right there.

totally wrong. governments and political systems come and go, but the banks are always there in the background, unscathed.

The number of men under arms in the US Military peaked in the 1940s when 10% of Americans were in the military. Now it's about 1%. The number of men and women in the military isn't growing, it's declining.

i agree. they should occupy wall street buildings and bring out the vermin who inhabit them and make them face popular justice, since the police and state wont do it.

I believe the article said that 47% of Congress makes more than $5 mil a year. Another article mentioned that Newt was paid $1.6 million AND $1.8 million for "consulting fees".

I guess it depends on how you define the "1%".

The target needs to be DC. Greed will always exist in the banking sector; Their entire goal is to make money. We need to make laws that will prevent this from happening agian.

You said the "military apparatus that was built up over the last decade". It hasn't been "built up over the last decade". It isn't growing at all, and we have the smallest percentage of the population in the military in the past sixty years.

You are certainly justified in throwing my own words back at me....... but an old woman is not a legitimate threat to public order under any circumstances. If an old woman is making a disruption then any police officer or human being in their right mind would offer gentle assistance. I would easily turn in my badge before I would pepper spray an old woman or a small child. Even in Latvia where police brutality is widespread this would be considered totally reprehensible behavior by a police officer. It is a disgrace.

I agree with the basic message of OWS. But they are going about it completely wrong.

Camping out in public parks and confrontations with the local police is counter productive. They have no leadership, no goals, and seem to be directing their anger at local city governments. This is pointless and doesn't accomplish anything short of costing our local cities millions in law enforcement costs.

They need to be protesting Congress directly, not Wall Street in NYC. Camping out just brings out the misfits and the bottom 10% of society. This is just making the movement look bad. Instead of "shutting down Wall Street" for a single day, what they need to do is shut down the Capital Building for a week. Camp out if you must, but not on a long term basis - that just attracts the bottom feeders and the homeless.

I agree it's extremely distasteful.

But police didn't target an 84 year old woman - they targeted a group of protesters who were refusing direct orders from police. This also included a priest and a nineteen year old pregnant woman.

And it's not like police walked up to an 84 year old woman and pepper sprayed her. I'm guessing police gave multiple warnings telling people to leave, and most likely told them they would be pepper sprayed. They had the option of leaving, and failed to do so.

I disagree with you on tactics but that's life. We'll see how it plays out at some point.

Yes I believe special consideration should be shown to an 80 year old woman even if she is smelly, godless, socialist, hippy engaging in anti-American behavior. I would give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was likely confused and suffering from dementia........ but what is your excuse? :winkwink:

They have little direction and no common goals. They are spending way too much time trying to fight local governments and local police departments so they can camp out in city parks. This is useless. At the same time, the longer this continues the more support OWS will loose - Every time an OWS protester gets caught on video taking a crap outside, OWS looses support.

Take this to Washington DC, and fucking take over the Capital building. Make Congress take note. And continue to do this until Congress makes a commitment to force change. THEN, when they follow through and pass some half effort law in an attempt to pacify the general public, go back, do it again, and say "Nice try, but you failed, we need results".

Camping out in a public park outside of Wall Street isn't going to a damn thing. Wall Street isn't going to make the changes on their own.

I would love for this to take front and center stage in the next election.

sucks but the bigger the crackdown the more the support both domestic and international will escalate and grow.

especially since this isn't the red brigades but people from all walks of life engaging in peaceful protest whose worst crime is some guy pooping in the street.

and face it while not everyone hates the government, EVERYONE hates the banks.

I don't presume to know what happened. Of course its horrible that an old lady ended up getting maced and the police depts attitude about it is pretty deplorable and their comments insensitive. However, that doesn't mean it was intentional.

I did read the article to see if any hints were given as to how this could have possibly happened and there are none (shocker). Just an inflammatory title and emotionally charged photo... .leaving a bunch of people to carry on as if a cop walked right up to her and pointed mace at her and sprayed her in the face to be mean. I personally believe that's the least reasonable assumption. But hey, i'm not a juvenile acting out and trying to challenge authority anywhere and everywhere and anyway I can.

But hey, you guys just keep rambling on about Fox News or tea party people when you get cornered... that's really your only trick, since those who are upset most by this incident are those who typically dodge facts like a gazelle escaping a lion.

You're confused. I said I had doubts about peoples assumptions. I don't know what happened. I don't presume to know what happened. What happened is horrible but that doesn't mean it was intentional or that there weren't extraordinary circumstances surrounding the event.

EDIT.. .i just noticed the videos: As the posted videos show, they weren't intentionally targeting old ladies and these people were warned to leave, to stop blocking traffic and streets etc and they wanted confrontation with police. They got it. End of story.

Actually, what you said that prompted my original response is quoted below. Nowhere in this statement do you question people's assumptions, you just make one of your own.
