I'm looking for a new dedicated server that doesn't suck...

I'm not completely happy with my current host and have been with them for several years now just because moving everything to a new server is a pain in the ass.

Just about everything in their control panel is broken. Everything from setting up crontabs to a nonworking phpmyadmin.

My websites are just too slow. Most of the time I'm stuck at 100kbps when I should be averaging 3mb/s on my connection.

I'm looking for something less than $100/month, no setup fee, able to transfer my sites to your server and give me the first month free so I can decide whether or not I'm happy there.

Please leave your email so i can contact you.

Thanks.

unmanaged I hope if you want something decent at that price. We run 20 MPS on each dedicated on one the fastest networks on the internet, faster then Yahoo and way faster then most hosts you will hear about here.

Starting price: $150 for a stand alone $99 for a vserver with a dedicated mobo, cpu, and ram.

If you don't need anything special for emails... Mojo and amerinoc bend over backwards for you to sent you up perfect. They both have packages for dedicated under $100... I think. Either way support responds in minutes.

Dedico is good as well and support is second to none.

Since when is anything at isprime under $100 a month? Unless you're going to hook him up with a VPS, which sounds like it would be fine for him.

I'm backing up my files now with a whooping 900k/s download speed. Usually my server is so slow that it takes 5 minutes for videos on my tube site to start streaming. I've tried several times to feed traffic to my website only to force a page not found error and it won't even load. It's no faster now than it was when I had a shared server from them.

My current server is actually a managed dedicated from Webair for $99/m with these specs...

Hardware specs:
Processor: P4 3.0Ghz
RAM: 2GB
Drives: 1 200 GB SATA (RAID: None)

I've emailed a few of the hosts recommended. One thing that concerned me is this.

Paying for the first month of hosting just to move and test my scripts on their server. Say I'm displeased after two weeks and decide to cancel, I get charged another month (30 days) before I can cancel? I've never had to provide written notice or prior notice to any host I've been with since 1999.

Hit up their sales department, I'm sure if you explain your situation they'll hook you up... :2 cents:

Why is your server slow? How much traffic are you getting? What's slowing you down? Is your io wait high, load, swapping? What's going on exactly? There might be something that can be done to solve the issue without moving. Unfortunately webair probably isn't going to be able to help but a good admin might be able to assuming you haven't just outgrown your server.

I'm not sure why my server is so slow. I was told that upgrading to a dedicated server would fix my problem. It sits at about 32% memory usage and 95% idle.

I'm not getting much traffic at all. Less than 10k hits per day. I bought some traffic from choker a while back and had to throttle it to less than 100hits/hour and it still crashed my website. I'm sure if more than 10 people accessed my website at the same time it would crash.

I'm pretty sure that with noone on my webserver my max transfer speed is around 900k/s. This is the fastest I've been able to download my backups. Most of the time I'll only get 100k/s and less.

Over the course of time I've been with CIHost, Candidhosting, and Webair. All have been a disappointment.

Matt over at AmeriNOC has been the only one to respond to my email, so I'll probably be moving there due to his quick reply and all the positive feedback I've seen on the forum about them.

Candid was ok at one point, Webair has always sucked. They were in the bro club because they took a lot of 'special' traffic back in the day. If AmeriNOC wasn't awesome you'd know about it by now. So many big sites hosted there and have been for ages. :2 cents:

I really do not blame Webair, but my own ignorance. Even tho I have been around the scene for several years I still have little understanding of webservers.

I managed the first two myself just with the help of forums and google to update software, firewalls, etc. This ended up with my webserver getting hacked and sending out 100,000,000 emails to random people... lol

I assumed that a metered webserver would mean an uncapped bandwidth. Meaning that 100 people could download a 100mb file at the same time without limitations. I was wrong tho and those 100 people would only get about 10k/s download speed on my server.

Although Webair was aware that it was for a tube site. I doubt any tube site could run being capped at 900k/s?

Babaganoosh 11-19-2011 10:00 PM

Without looking at the problem I am going to guess it's a tuning issue. Throwing more hardware at the issue might help resolve the problems but why move unless you really need to.

I'd really suggest getting a decent admin to take a look at things and see what can be done.

I'll tell you from previous experience though that webair's control panel is a steaming pile of shit. If you need a control panel, moving might be the best option. Directadmin isn't terrible and it's usually the cheapest.

Well it was nice to get rid of that admin and getting one that actually works. But I'm still only getting about 600k/s download rate on a 60mb test file. From my understanding a 100 mbps connection should be about 10mb/s (12.5)? Matt and Zach have been very helpful getting me setup over there at AmeriNOC so I hope that they can help me "tune" the server up as you suggest.

adulteuhost is great. Don't let anyone talk you into LeaseWeb because they will make your hair turn grey. To fix your control panel, upgrade everything to the latest versions.

Webair uses their own CP, there's nothing you can upgrade yourself. And well, the functions of the CP would be great if they'd actually work. Especially when you buy a new server, quite a bunch of them don't work at the beginning until you hit up support to get stuff fixed. Setting up my latest new server with Webair took more than 2 weeks with the tech responsible ignoring my e-mails and Gerard ignoring my ICQ messages. Too bad, because all of the above used to work fine years ago, when I got my first server with them. Well, as this new server was also a test of their service, as I'm gonna need a big one for my first paysite project next year, it looks like someone else will get my business :pimp

Anyway, I'm sure the problems you currently have could have been solved even at Webair. Actually I never had many uptime or speed problems at WA and if I had them one of their better admins (I can recommend Ayumi) has always been able to fix em. The night shift techs I usually get (as I'm in a different timezone) in live chat can't fix shit, though.

100kb/s download? are you sure it's not your isp? did you try contacting support? I am downloading faster then 100kb/s from my webair server and im half a world away.

borked 11-22-2011 07:27 AM

The best way to test your true bw capacity is to test it from another datacenter. Sent me an email if you want me to test and/or do an internal diagnostic...

Yes, downloading test files from 50mb up to 2gb in size peaked around 900k/s with drops to as low as 100k/s. Sometimes it would take a few minutes for videos to even start streaming on my tube site. Whenever I bought traffic to feed to it to build up my trades it would just crash the server.

Now I have moved from a dedicated at Webair to a VPS at AmeriNOC. My average download rate at my new server is averaging about 600k/s.

I'm on Verizon FIOS 25/5, and I average around 2.5mb/s downloading data from most sources.

Some might say it's because I'm actually sharing my bandwidth now with people on the server. I don't believe it would make this much difference. It's a 100 mbps uplink to 1 gbps tunnel and should still average around 10mb/s download rate even with heavy traffic.

100 mbps = 10mb/s (actutally around 12.5mb/s) correct?

I'm really at the maximum I'm willing to pay for a server for a tube site that isn't even generating me money at this point.

The support at AmeriNOC has been good so far. I've been in contact with Matt, Zach, and Chris. They are aware of my concerns about the speed of my server. I just hope they can resolve it without telling me I have to upgrade to a dedicated server. I've already been that route with no results. I have had several basic shared servers for $10/month that can achieve the speeds I'm experiencing so far.

I'd just like to be able to buy some traffic to feed my site without wasting another $300 just to crash my server.

Jakez 11-22-2011 01:45 PM

Certified/Naked Hosting is awesome. Do some searches on here for some of the hosts mentioned and I'm sure you will see they have the best history.

Christina T. 11-22-2011 01:54 PM

Webair works well for me. I think you should try to contact them to fix your issue they are very helpful support wise in my experience with them.

It's funny how the same people like to bash them from time to time. I guess the biggest usually get the most criticism.

WebairMetz 11-22-2011 01:55 PM

Gfed I have tried hitting you up on ICQ a few times. Get in contact with me and I will be happy to set things straight for you.

Thanks
