My neighbor is obsessed by yard work

Ok well he's kinda across the street from my place but the guy is seriously obsessed with yard work. He's retired and him and his wife will spend hours almost everyday doing something in their yard.

I have a office set up in a back bedroom and my computer is up by the window, so when I look out I see his house and I swear the guy is always out there.

Today the guy raked his yard for hours getting dead grass out. Meanwhile his wife was weeding the planters up around the house for hours as well.

I could understand maybe once or twice a week in the summer but it's practically winter here and we have already had snow this year. Not to mention he will sweep his drive way with a push broom probably twice a day.

So you think winter is here and they guy would take a break til summer right? Hell no the guy gets out there and shovels the snow off his roof at least once a week when it's snowing and he shovels his driveway "at least" two times a day.

I swear to god I hope when I retire I'm not obsessed with my damn yard work like that.. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Anyone else have a neighbor like this?

Hey, that's how they stay out of arguments :

1. Get out of the house.

2. On fixed income; where do you go?....into the yard.

:1orglaugh

Also, it's cheaper than going to the gym.

:thumbsup

Having responsible neighbors that take care of their property must be such a bitch.

Spunky 11-20-2011 03:12 PM

I think this is what it is.. The guy probably retired from a job that he was pretty busy at and now gets bored. So in a sense taking care of his yard is now his job.

For the guys above.. I'm not trying to trash the guy. I'd much rather have someone whom take pride in their place living across from me than some redneck or hood punk that has 3 broken down cars in the yard, with the place looking like shit.

It just seems this guy is almost border-line obsessed with it. My parents have a place up here they stay at part of the year and oddly enough they have a neighbor across from them that is just like this guy.

Their neighbor cuts the grass two to three times a week until it snows. When fall hits the guy is out there every day raking or vacuuming up the leaves.

It just seems odd to me that people can get so fixated on one thing spending so much time doing something that the average person wouldn't want to do in the first place. I can understand gardening as a hobby and so on, but just seems so damn excessive.

Just showed this thread to him and pointed at your house.

I'll give a teaser for those that are too lazy to click.. it's actually a very good article..

The nation is still recovering from a crushing recession that sent unemployment hovering above nine percent for two straight years. The president, mindful of soaring deficits, is pushing bold action to shore up the nation's balance sheet. Cloaking himself in the language of class warfare, he calls on a hostile Congress to end wasteful tax breaks for the rich. "We're going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share," he thunders to a crowd in Georgia. Such tax loopholes, he adds, "sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary ? and that's crazy."

Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. "Do you think the millionaire ought to pay more in taxes than the bus driver," he demands, "or less?"

The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: "MORE!"

The year was 1985. The president was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

crockett 11-20-2011 05:15 PM

derp.. ignore that post above it was wrong topic, but if you are bored it's a very good read.

cherrylula 11-20-2011 05:25 PM

yep we have old people neighbors in their yard fixing every little thing all day... it is annoying but yeah at least they are out there keeping the 'hood nice.

we have one, she comes outside and stands in her yard to brush her hair all the time. lol @ old people. (some of us are on our way to that lol)

kane 11-20-2011 05:54 PM

Better than the neighbor I used to have. In the summer he would pull out a lawn chair and sit in the yard with a cooler full of beer next to him. As the day wore on he would drink them all and eventually pass out. When I first moved in came home one afternoon and he was laying next to the chair face down on the lawn. I went over to see if he was okay. He was drunk as hell. About 6months after I moved in he moved out. he was an older guy so I think he moved into some kind of retirement center.

It made me sad to think that everyday the highlight of this guy's day was passing out.

I have a woman who lives across the street from me like that. She gets down on her hands and knees and scrubs her sidewalks with a scrub brush. She trims her grass with scissors, not garden shears, sewing scissors. I wish she would take an interest in my yard.

That actually reminds me about a house I lived in FL years ago. There was a 90+ year old lady that lived across the street from me that would come out just before the sun set and pick weeds out of her yard all night long, til almost sun rise. She did it at night because it was cooler out side.

This was way before I was doing online stuff back when I was just a few years out of high school. I had a large lawn service then and offered many times to cut her grass for free and she never wanted us to. She was happy pulling her weeds..

I totally forgot about that old lady. She died a year or two later think she was 97 or something like that and could stand bent over for hours at a time pulling weeds and cutting her grass with scissors.

Was crazy stuff.

Good for them, keeping active.

SleazyDream 11-20-2011 09:56 PM

my neighbor is retired and has an incredible yard, but the guy on the other side of him is insane, it's PERFECT - he's to my neighbor like I'm to him LOL

Fletch XXX 11-20-2011 10:01 PM

as cherry said, we got some neighbors like this lol same type

bronco67 11-20-2011 10:11 PM

Yard work is a hobby for some people. Who's to say its any better or worse than rebuilding an antique car, or painting, or whatever? He gets off on it, so great for him.

Rochard 11-20-2011 10:25 PM

That's because old people have nothing to do.

John-ACWM 11-21-2011 06:38 AM

My grandfather does the same, I know how you feel :)

That actually is not so bad ... if you can manage not to have the police called four times and spend over an hour standing there talking your way out of something with officers all around you .. and if you don't start shit with people a lot tougher than you are like a little dog trying to maul a pitbull .. and if you don't say stupid shit or run upstairs and try to break down the door of that god damned extra loud neighbor you would like to fucking **** ... . like I did last time I had alcohol

Oh well. I can't handle alcohol any more and Jimmy Buffett left Key West a long long time ago :(

My grandfather literally worked at employment positions for OVER fifty years. He worked 12+ hour days most of that time or had two jobs. He went TWO HUNDRED DAYS without a day off one time. All to be henpecked by my grandmother. He has to ask if he can go and do yard work or turn his sprinklers on. In fairness, though he was competent at work, he can't handle shit at home. If she'd let him he'd spend ALL DAY KILLING HIMSELF working on the yard.

Not sure why

candyflip 11-21-2011 06:55 AM

We found my 90 year old neighbor dead yesterday. We hadn't seen her in a few days, so I knocked on the door. When she didn't answer, I called the police.

She had been gone a few days. Fell asleep in her chair and didn't wake up.

Turns out she was a MASSIVE hoarder too.

Chris 11-21-2011 08:04 AM

haha i hate that type of neighbor
who has to make their yard look awesome and make yours look like shit in comparison

i gave up and just have someone just mow it and edge it

JustJ 11-21-2011 08:07 AM

Our neighbors make a family event of cleaning their cars every Sunday. At first its okay, but after hearing a vacuum cleaner running for 2 hours it'll drive you insane!

MarkDeus 11-21-2011 08:13 AM

My neighbor is a dancer, and she knocks on my backdoor to deliver cake.

Thank you, downtown Montreal!

tabasco 01-15-2012 02:44 PM

I have the same thing. Old guy across the street always in the yard making a ten minute job last all afternoon. I always say if I am that age with nothing better to do than that put a bullet in my head.

Also if I or a neighbor starts any yardwork and he is not already out there he will be out within 2 minutes and start. Pretty funny, but kinda sad at the same time.

rowan 01-15-2012 07:06 PM

My neighbour mows our lawn as well as his own!

He usually does it about every couple of weeks, but if he ever does it "off schedule" you know he's going to have visitors later that day...

During the xmas/new year holiday period he's been mowing it about once per week, which is excessive. Not sure if he's bored, or what's going on there.
