Best guitarist EVER inside..

Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history on Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Eric Clapton
3. Jimmy Page
4. Keith Richards
5. Jeff Beck
6. B.B. King
7. Chuck Berry
8. Eddie Van Halen
9. Duane Allman
10. Pete Townshend

Jarmusch 11-23-2011 10:42 PM

Those lists are BS.

And it fails without Steve Vai in the top 10.

Spunky 11-23-2011 10:43 PM

What no Alex Lifeson? it's discrimination against Canadians once again

Everyone has their own favorite guitar player, just like everyone has an asshole. These lists never go anywhere.

Shotsie 11-23-2011 10:58 PM

No Buckethead? :321GFY

Jarmusch 11-23-2011 11:00 PM

My guitar player is better than yours.

Technical skill isn't really subjective. You may or may not like the type of music a certain guitarist plays, or their style; but that doesn't really determine their skill level. For instance, I hate Dragonforce, I think their music is shit; but I still recognize their talent. Now Nirvana, on the other hand, I like; but I will admit that Kurt Cobain was a pretty bad guitarist.

MacJee 11-23-2011 11:09 PM

Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
John Petrucci
Alex Lifeson
Paul Gilbert

my favorite future hall of famers :thumbsup

lists never go anywhere but they are fun fodder, its always interesting seeing how your opinion ranks with others.

Bird 11-23-2011 11:16 PM

Orianthi will be on that list soon. Austrailian Babe.........This chick shreds it!

Robbie 11-23-2011 11:18 PM

Looking that list over...I'd say that they are focusing on ROCK & blues guitarists...and also it appears that they are listing guitarists who aren't just proficient but also created a completely recognizable and highly copied style (like Keith Richards or Pete Townsend did)

Mr Pheer 11-23-2011 11:40 PM

No Slash in the top 10?

Godsmack 11-23-2011 11:41 PM

Frank Zappa

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 11-23-2011 11:52 PM

Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Robert Fripp, John McLaughlin, Chet Atkins, Ry Cooder, Django Reinhardt, Carlos Santana, The Edge (U2), Neil Young.

If we expand beyond Rock, Andres Segovia, Carlos Montoya, Julian Bream, John Williams, Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Charlie Hunter, Stanley Jordan, Andy Summers, and me, of course.

Yeah, I would imagine that their level of influence has a lot to do with some of them making the list. Which is why I can't understand how Eddie Van Halen made it.:winkwink: That list is pretty good, I would switch a few up.

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Eric Clapton
3. Jimmy Page
4. Keith Richards
5. Slash
6. Buckethead
7. Kirk Hammet
8. Synyster Gates(Avenged Sevenfold)
9. Ry Cooder
10. John Frusciante

adultchatpay 11-24-2011 04:46 AM

The list sucks for sure, Rolling Stones is based mostly on rock and roll. It's hard to insert someone far from that genre.
The title should be, MOST INFLUENTIAL GUITARIST!!

Today's guitarist can play better and outplay anyone on their list. But those on the list are the most influential (they can outperform anyone), even for generations.

Well, just a thought.

Ok ........

Minte 11-24-2011 05:06 AM

Any top10 list with Chuck Berry on it is suspect. He is at best a mediocre strummer.

Mutt 11-24-2011 05:21 AM

i guess since it's Rolling Stone magazine it's assumed that it's a list of greatest rock and roll guitarists. if not, the list is a joke, leaving out classical and jazz guitarists.

Obviously Steve Vai must be on the list. Satriani as well. Other great guitarists is Paco de Lucia, Django Reinhardt and Øystein Sunde.

Favorite bassplayer is Les Claypool. He is too awesome! :thumbsup

Nicky 11-24-2011 05:45 AM

For a mediocre strummer, he invented it. No one else was playing like him in the 50's.

Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Carlos Montoya are some greats also

Fabien 11-24-2011 06:16 AM

BBKING ?????????????????????????????????

I see that you don't play guitar huh ?

Nydahl 11-24-2011 06:22 AM

This question is impossible to answer - tons of great players and there are no rules/basics to judge upon.
Anyway your list is full of rock and rock'nroll players - you forgot jazz players a bit and I think there are lots of jazz guitarists technicaly better then any of guys above.
Pat Methany as a shiny example of the very very best play technique.
Also there are some players who are pretty underestimated - Martin Barre from Jethro Tull surely 1 of them - never got the respect he deserves I think.:2 cents::2 cents:

at least you make me take a guitar and play after really long time :pimp

Ever heard of Muddy Waters?

Chuck did kill it though on his #1 hit *My Ding-A-Ling* blazing guitar riffs..

michael.kickass 11-24-2011 09:28 AM

The list sucks, Joe Satriani is probably the best guitar player on the planet, way better than many of the names on that list.

I can't believe I'm the first one to mention STEVIE RAY VAUGHN. :thumbsup

I would rank my fav top 5 like this:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Edward Van Halen
3. Jimmy Page
4. Randy Rhoads
5. Alex Lifeson

Music nowadays rarely showcases an individual musicians talent, the focus is more about making money with a more commercial sound.

rico suave 11-24-2011 09:46 AM

None of the members of Menudo?

L-Pink 11-24-2011 09:48 AM

Interesting that Duane Allman fell to #9 from the last Rolling Stone list where he was #2.

.

Caligari 11-24-2011 09:50 AM

The need to specify greatest ROCK guitarist. Django is rolling in his grave. Probably.

As far as rock guitarists, sure Hendrix should be way up there but where is Robert Fripp, Andy Summers, Frank Zappa or Roy Buchanan (who went rock when he signed with Alligator Records shortly before he was suicided)

there's Jan Akkerman (Focus), Ronnie Montrose, Brian May etc etc etc
.

:2 cents: Berry may not have been the best technically but he invented a rock style (along with Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis) which is still being played and riffed on worldwide. So that gives him cred for top 10 ROCK guitarist list.

.

escorpio 11-24-2011 10:12 AM

Jimmy Page and Jerry Garcia are my favorites.

Absolutely way to high on the list, should be in the top ten easily.

.

Chosen 11-24-2011 04:59 PM

Honestly, I don't know...

ThumbLord 11-24-2011 05:02 PM

well Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Jan Akkerman, Django Reinhardt and so on and so on should have made the top 10 list IMHO

MacJee 11-24-2011 08:47 PM

everyone is good, it's just a matter of whom do you prefer. :)

In terms of influential players, they most certainly are at the top of any such list.

Steve Vai and John Petrucci are technically amazing players, I love them both, but I'd wager Chuck Berry and Keith Richards have inspired more guys to pick up a guitar, and probably were some inspiration for Vai and Petrucci.

I think you'd have to break the list down by "top technically great players" and "top influential players" to be fair. Then break it down by music genre.

not for everyone's taste... but when it comes to pure jamming you just cant beat trey anastasio
