you know when by mistake you FTP in the wrong transfer mode..............

grrrrrrrrrr ........... i downloaded a huge template file in binary mode instead of acsii and now the file is a mess, formating gone and those little rectangles all over the place, a mess.

any way to get the file back properly formatted?

Cystomatic 12-05-2011 02:13 PM

Re-downloading I guess? Or meh, try a binary mode to acsii converter?

Tempest 12-05-2011 02:23 PM

Re-download it... Or use an editor like editplus.com which allows you to switch between the unix/pc format.

Or maybe this thing... Never used it so no idea if it's good, crap or anything

Open it in Dreamweaver, Edit Plus or any other advanced editor. Copy the text and save it again in a new file.

you shouldn't use FTP, use SCP instead

You still use an ftp client that doesn't do that automatically for you?

http://www.flashfxp.com/ FTW!

They only do it automatically if you set it up properly with the appropriate extensions otherwise they default to binary mode.

I'm quite sure Filezilla doesn't need such setting up.

Filezilla did it - in Auto transfer mode, file extension was .tmpl

thanks for the suggestions

I just did

tar -cvf blah*.c

instead of

tar -cvf blah.tar blah*.c

...which wrote the archive to one of the .c files, rather than blah.tar

In other words, it overwrote one of the files I was trying to archive.

*facepalm*

Luckily that particular file hadn't changed for a few days and I had a backup...

I have opened it in wordpad and then saved it. That usually fixes it too.
