do these really work? can an app really extend battery life?

I'm skeptical though some due a routine maintenance of draining it all the way and monitor the batteries behavior.

I replaced my iPhone 3gs battery and had to rip the whole freakin' thing apart. If I hate anything about apple is they build quality products but they make them so hard to work on.
