Gingrich Focuses on Electromagnetic Pulse Threat
Gingrich, a current front-runner in the GOP nominating race, has used public appearances, interviews and the foreword of a science-fiction novel to expound on the threat of an electromagnetic pulse attack, which would theoretically release an enormous wave of electricity, disrupting power networks and halting the innumerable everyday interactions that rely upon them.
"Millions would die in the first week alone," Gingrich asserted. http://www.instablogsimages.com/imag...46Ege_3868.jpg |
Gingrich is an idiot. An EMP "attack" kills electronics not people.
A much bigger EMP "threat" comes from our sun which during the highpoint of its 11 year sunspot cycle is more likely to have a coronal mass ejection which includes other fields, a huge amount of electromagnetic radiation. It has enough energy to disrupt power lines and cause blackouts. http://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/CMEs.shtml |
EMP does not kill people, farmville withdrawal kills people.

He is not an IDIOT, without electric patient in hospitals would die, people without water in some areas, babies born too early, imagine all gadgets dead by chock, not just without power, etc... but million deads sound over ride of numbers...

there's around 10k airplanes in the sky at any given time, if theres 100 people in each on average , thats a million people in the air at any given time.. thats not counting the cars, trains etc , although a worldwide emp attack seems unlikely/impossible |
I read the book they are talking about, pretty interesting read. A coordinated EMP attack would really fuck everyone, who has their own food supplies once the stores are empty?

Educating us on what he would stage to artificially provoke the next war, no doubt.

This is just whacky enough that it might be true... Gingrich is a bigger threat to the U.S. than a dozen terrorist nutjobz though...
:D |
Well, I didn't think I would vote this time around, but now that there is something to fear I'm thinking about it. If he would just continue to focus on this fear, and the media picks up the story and focuses on the fear, I will run to the polls and vote for him so that I'm safe!

in order to take out the united states power grid. the stuff that is not shielded. the emp would need to be done from space in order to have clear line of sight. which means multiple launches from who ever is attacking of high yeild nuclear devices. at that point nothing matters anymore

Note; the books point of view mirrors the pentagons. . |
jeeez, dont you people have other problems than either killing people or fueling the fear of being killed?

We have already used EMP style attacks in Iraq during Shock & Awe. It wasn't so much as a bomb but instead done via air craft that can shut down all communication & electronics for a limited range for a short amount of time. Including the entire power grid.
It's not science fiction but the likelihood of anyone attacking us with it is pretty much nill. We have probably the most advanced military in the world and we have very limited ability to do such attacks. Even still if we were attack it wouldn't be the entire country but maybe a small part of a city at best. The only way something like this could have an effect on the whole country is if it were some Natural phenomenon, like some pulse from space or alien invaders. This is just more of the typical right wing scare tactics. Pretty soon they will be trying to convince everyone of a zombie out break from bird flu. This is why I can't stand Gingrich, because he's of the same neo con ideology, that was Reagan, and both Bush admins. They use scare tactics and bull shit to push their agenda which typically revolves around giving big military contractors lots of tax payer money. |

Can you imagine three-fourths of the US without any "electronics"? Computers, cell phone, televisions, radios - all dead. No power at all. No transportation, no cars, no rail, no planes. No food - Without computers you can't ship anything, which doesn't matter much being as the majority of the trucks are dead - but, no power, you can't store anything, and without power you can't buy anything. In a heartbeat we would be back in the stone ages. No power, no communication, no food, no transportation. And I'm guessing I'm missing a lot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse |
I have a rifle, a knife, and mountains with fresh water and plenty of game. EMP away ;)

While yes it would be a set back, we surely wouldn't end up in the stone age and it wouldn't be the end of the world. Power only became a luxury that everyone became accustomed to over the last 100 years or so. Life would change that is for sure but one thing is certain, it wouldn't be the end of the world and people would adapt. We sailed ships around the globe for hundreds of years with no power or gas. We use trains to transport people across the country powered by steam and the average family probably had 2 horses vs 2 cars.. |
