Police Scanners

Do any of you listen to police scanners?
I've been listening to some local ones for quite some time. Some of the stuff that comes up is pretty crazy.

The other day, an officer was driving and a blacked out (lights out) H2 pulled up next to her and motioned like they were pulling out a gun. She pulled over and got on the radio, obviously shaken up a bit.

Was very interesting once listening to the Police in Melbourne, however for several years they have used encrypted, frequency hopping digital communications so it's no longer possible.

When I was a kid, my dad and I would listen to his police scanner all of the time...was some interesting shit always happening.

RonTheDon 12-13-2011 01:15 AM

Yeah, I use 5-0 radio on my iPad.
I've always been into listening to them.

CB Radios get pretty crazy. I can't believe how some people modify those things.

I listened to the shit go down on the scanner when the VA Tech shooter (the one last week) was still at large, lots of "male spotted in best buy with gray hoody, officer xx en route", how scary is that.... the dude just killed a cop and they're getting tips of where he might be, man I wouldn't want to be a cop trying to find that guy....

Catch them doing criminal things and the like.
Feel it's my duty as a concerned citizen.

I got a uniden scanner that I use all the time. Crazy shit happens all over Tampa that never makes it on the news. Very entertaining. There is a pretty good scanner that is for people who have no clue how to program scanners it's called the Uniden Home Patrol. It's super expensive like $500 but it's pretty much idiot proof.

iPad and iPhone apps are ok and cheap but u can't control what u r listening too. I keep my scanner in my car and when I see police headed somewhere I turn it on to find out whats goin on.

One night I saw a bunch of cops running emergency late at night while I was driving home. I turned on the scanner and found out a deputy shot someone during a traffic stop.

The guy tried to drive away during the traffic stop and when the deputy reached in to prevent the guy from putting the car in Drive the guy trapped the cops arm and drove off with him hanging on! So the cop pulled out his gun and fired a few shots at the guy and he finally let go and drove off. Turns out he missed the guy and they found the car abandoned later that night then arrested the guy the next day. Crazy shit happens all around. So carry a gun and prepare to defend yourself!

I have the world police scanner app on my iPad2, its very cool when you have breaking news come on tv and if its an area where the scanner is available you can listen in live to the action. Pretty cool stuff.

bignasty 12-13-2011 07:23 AM

Haven't listened to one in a while. Was thinking about getting one the other day. I was reading a story last week about all the departments that are starting to encrypt their signal.

I used to years ago...

CIVMatt 12-13-2011 09:53 AM

used to years ago but once a lot of them went encrypted digital it's pointless, plus there are way better cell phone scanner apps now to even own a real one.

Spunky 12-13-2011 11:03 AM

I used to when I was a kid, haven't done so in years

Gouge 12-13-2011 11:41 AM
