A gun and grenade attack in the centre of the Belgian city

Wow people are crazy and getting crazier

Witnesses say a man in his 40s threw grenades at a bus stop in Place Saint Lambert, a busy square. At least two other men are thought to be involved.

Reports say one of the attackers is among the dead. Local media say another has been detained, while a third is involved in a stand-off with police.

It is not clear who the attackers are.

There are reports of a fourth man escaping the scene.

TV images showed blood splattered across the cobblestones.

Medical staff are said to be attending to some of the injured in the courthouse.

Seven of them are in a serious condition, and doctors at a city hospital are trying to save the life of an 18-month-old boy injured in the attack.

Clearly Belgium needs stricter grenade laws.

(On a serious note, horrific event, very sad to see :( )

So far, 4 dead - 75 wounded.

One of the dead is the purpetrator himself. Apparently he's thrown grenades, shot with an AK-47, and supposedly shot himself through the head afterwards.

Least four people dead and 75 wounded. Including 18 month young boy.

The guy had already been sentenced for illegal possesion of weapons and drug trafficking. Today he was also required to show up for an interview regarding another case.

Witnesses to the gun and grenade attack in the Belgian city of Liege have described scenes of panic in the main square, near a busy Christmas Market.

Nicolas Gimenne, a journalist at local newspaper La Meuse, had spent the morning reporting on court proceedings inside the courthouse on the square.

Heading out to get something to eat, he was close to the Point Chaud bakery when he saw a man on the roof, just a short distance away.

"I had the impression he was throwing a round object at the coach station below," Mr Gimenne told La Meuse.

I saw death close up”

Nicolas Gimenne Journalist

"I looked up in the noise and commotion and the man grabbed another object and removed the pin from it.

"Like a magistrate who was just in front of me, I began to run to get away. For a few seconds I didn't understand, couldn't believe, what was happening."

Mr Gimenne went into a department store where people were sheltering at the back, as security forces moved into the square.

"I passed within 4-5 metres of the attacker," he said. "I saw death close up."

I read first about it on GeenStijl, some people commenting from Belgium wrote there was a terrorist attack alert yesterday in Belgium, and jumped to conclusions after today's event.

Just another individual going nuts under pressure of a fucked up society.

Your mistake there is that you read GS :winkwink:

And indeed, they now believe it was an individual, not a group.

This is insane.... As if guns wasn't enough to create mayhem.

They also found a dead woman in his house, presumably his cleaning lady.

In 2007 he was sentenced to jail for drug trafficking and illegal arms possesion.
He also had 2800 cannabis plants, a rocket launcher and a kalasjnikov.

Was sentenced for 58 months and a fine of 11,000 euros.

What the fuck? Only 58 months for all of that? Less than five years for drug trafficking, A ROCKET LAUNCHER, an AK47, and 2800 weed plants..........

What were they thinking even letting him out ...

So he was already sentenced for illegal weapons & drugs but he was walking around free still? Seems like great legal system for criminals..

I could understand if the guy was sentenced for jay walking but why let an obvious criminal whom is trafficking stuff that can kill walk the streets once he been sentenced?

He had already spent 58 months in jail, as you can see.

Gunman Nordine Amrani 33, had previously been jailed for possession of arms and drugs offences

LIEGE, Belgium — Nordine Amrani, the lone gunman who committed suicide after a fatal shooting spree in a crowded Belgian square, was an ex-convict with a passion for arms but a fear of being thrown behind bars again.

The 33-year-old Amrani was well known to police before he went on the rampage in the eastern Belgian city of Liege, opening fire on families shopping for Christmas and youths leaving end-of-year school exams.

“He was a delinquent who was in trouble throughout his life, up before children’s courts, petty courts, appeals courts,” said Cedric Visart de Bocarme, the prosecutor for the Liege region.

Born November 15, 1978 in a Brussels suburb, Amrani was orphaned in childhood and was “very quickly left to fend for himself,” said one of his lawyers Abdelhadi Amrani, who despite his name is not a relative.

A welder by trade, Amrani’s repeated brushes with the law included charges of drug dealing, petty theft, illegal arms possession and rape in 2003. He served five and a half years behind bars.

In 2007, detectives discovered an arsenal when raiding his home, finding 9,500 gun parts, including silencers and rifles, as well as 2,800 cannabis plants.

He is said to have been expert at dismantling, repairing and assembling all sorts of weapons but was never linked to any terrorist act or network.

Acquitted on the arms charges, Amrani was sentenced to 48 months in jail for drug offences in 2009 but paroled in October last year.

On leaving jail, Amrani seemed the epitome of the perfect parolee.

As a welder “he had hands of gold. He could pull apart a vehicle and put it together again practically with his eyes shut. He was a great mechanic,” said his former lawyer.

Respecting the terms of his conditional release by remaining in touch as required with parole officers, Amrani also found a partner and a home, registered for unemployment benefits, regularly had therapy with a psychologist, and more recently, signed up for a metal-workers training scheme.
