What specs do you run for ACVHD movie files?
 

Recently started filming with a Canon vixia and it outputs 1080 video in ACVHD format as opposed to the MOV files my old (stolen) T3i would save in. I like the vixia because its pocketable unlike the big touristy SLR and it has autofocus unlike the T3i. Try POV'ing a girl with no hands at all its not easy. I have heard these files require a bigger more badass computer to work with, if so what system specs are you guys running?

Hi Shimmy! Not to hijack your thread, but along with the specs, I'd be curious to know what software you or anyone is using to convert the ACVHD format to other formats (.mov, .mp4, etc). ?

got the Vixia myself.. along with Sony Vegas Pro..

Problem,

it's too much for my computer to render in fluid motion, it's all gappy.

Now I have to buy another computer, like atleast an i5.

Your computer isnt the problem if its rendering choppy the render is probably fine its the playback thats not

with vegas 11 and current edit systems your video card has more to do with rendering speeds than your CPU does...premiere and vegas still dont support hardware rendering as well as they should but its for sure getting better and better.

Make sure you always use high end DDR3 memory otherwise you system will bottle neck the latency is the most important factor in any system commands.

No matter how fast your CPU or GPU is, the memory is where it will bottle neck if you have shitty store bought memory.

For true video editing and encoding always use DDR3 memory that is no higher than Cas Latency 7.
Cas Latency 8, 9, 10 are to slow in giving commands to high bandwidth CPU and GPU through put.

Dont fall for the cool looking ram modules.

I'm using a MacBookPro with FCP. First convert AVCHD to ProRes, then edit, and output as mp4/h264. I'm not saying that Apple is better for this than a PC, the combination of hard- and software was expensive, but it was also completely plug and play. I'll be getting a PC with Premiere soon though, just to see if I like that better.

Vegas is my favorite software to use with ACVHD, but currently I'm doing the same thing EukerVoorn is doing too.

I love Premiere Pro. It handles every format natively that I have ever used whether you are using HDV from a mini-DV tape, XDCam EX, or .mov files from a Canon 5D MarkII. I believe that it also handles AVCHD without conversion as well.

+1 for adobe stepping up their software, switched from Vegas & FCP to Premiere last year :thumbsup
