Wow, that chimp outlived most of his human co-stars.

Michael O 12-28-2011 07:04 AM

Yeah made it to 80 which I would be happy with.

Tarzan must be sad :( RIP Cheetah

Poppy 12-28-2011 07:05 AM

Wow, he lived a long time.

He outlived Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. Good for the monkey!

Somewhat related: I typed "when did maureen o'sullivan die?" into Google and I get this:

Showing results for when did maureen o'sullivan died
Search instead for when did maureen o'sullivan die

When did Maureen O'Sullivan died, Google?

Nothing I like better than an illiterate search engine that automatically changes what I'm looking for before I get a chance to even look for it.

What a nightmare it is that so many of us rely on this broken, arrogant company.

I remember the Tarzan movies back from the very early 80's when I grew up and were a preteen having only 1 channel to watch and every Saturday if I were lucky there were a Tarzan movie on and I probably watched all of them.

Apparently, the chimp that died was not the "Cheeta" in the 1930's Tarzan movies, and was probably at least 20+ years younger than claimed.

Here is a fascinating article debunking the celebrity chimps' identity:

Lie of the Jungle: The Truth About Cheeta the Chimpanzee

Here is a separate 1957 newsclip supposedly about the famous simian dying 50+ years ago:

BTW, there were no chimp companions or "Cheeta" (Cheetah), in any of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan novels (although there was a monkey companion Nkima in some of the later books).

The false story of Cheeta being 80 years old plays into our sense of nostalgia, but it also perpetuates Hollywood inaccurate stereotypes about animals, and ignores the abuse that animals used in movies are often subjected to.
