Debating Whether Or Not to Stay in this thing...

The definition of insanity is doing the same things expecting different results...Found gfy almost 4 years ago, made my first site in 2009 was making $500-600 beer money off one site LOL I didnt even know what FTP was (thank you PornGuy for teaching me how to use ftp and make galleries around 09 or 2010 :winkwink:), I literally made a entrance page with a picture using skills i learned in a basic junior college html class and linked it to a sponsor who was converting at 1:20-1:30 for me. Looking back that was the time I should have been making my move. I had no clue about the "adult industry" or the dozens of affiliate programs out there though.

My first adult check came from AFF though (around 2004 or 5), it helped me pay my rent at the time i was on the football team and had slacker roommates. I needed money was already working at Mickey Ds and living in a very small town in Minnesota. Somehow i found an AFF affiliate link and was amazed that they were paying people to get people to click a link! Just to click lol. So i signed up, and spammed my link all over yahoo and collegeclub groups. Few weeks later i got a check for a few hundred dollars and I stopped spamming the link because I thought I would get in trouble :1orglaugh.

Was crazy easy and I didnt even know it. Now I work 10x as hard, have 100x the traffic and sites and I make around about the same as I did when I didnt try and was clueless. Been about 2 yrs at affiliate work and havent really gotten anywhere, just takes so long to learn so much. Plus offline work kept me occupied to where I didnt care too much...So I wonder if Im nuts thinking things will change in 2012...Im giving myself 6 or 7 months this year to get some traction with major projects and increase revenues, if things remain the same or decline Im out by middle of the year...I thought about quitting already but I owe it to myself and the people who have helped me to give it another shot ...Happy new year :thumbsup

This business has changed 180 degrees in a few years.

As PJ says, go where the money is, not where it was.

BIGTYMER 01-05-2012 03:53 AM

Are you making more then you would working at McD's? If so, stay in adult for now.

Don't even think about what you were making a few years ago. It was a bubble. Think about things what you want to do now and weight them against expected income.

Start promoting cams :thumbsup

OR promote them more :2 cents:

I am split doing mainstream WordPress sites for business and still keeping up my network of adult sites.

I'm not making 500.00 days consistently like I use to but I still hit that once in awhile.

xNetworx 01-05-2012 12:06 PM

Get creative and when you find something that works, scale it up until you can't scale no mo

pornguy 01-05-2012 12:37 PM

There is plenty of money in porn. You just have to adjust to the new things, the new ways and the new methods.

It was fun helping you get started and I am glad you were able to make some money back then, as well as now. I hope that you continue but I understand a lot of people dropping our for many reasons.

One guy was telling me yesterday that he is out as an affiliate because he is sick of getting fucked over by the programs. I think we are the only program he is still promoting.

Hope you have a great year and it improves. You know Im always around to chat or help.

:)

Happy new Year to all and hope this is your best ever.

Paul Markham 01-05-2012 12:43 PM

Going where the money is. Is a great strategy.

Going where it will be is the greatest.

Think long and hard about the changes online and get in first.
SOPA will change the online game, maybe not in adult.
It will change it in other ares.

DaddyHalbucks 01-05-2012 01:43 PM

Obviously, it's a good time to re-evaluate your strategy.

That's like saying "buy low, sell high" - the difficulty is in the execution. Five recent bubbles: online porn, tech, real estate, defense contracting, hedge funds. All required different types of people. It isn't like you can just jump to the next thing, even if you can predict it.

What are the bubbles now? Things that have grown over 50% per annum in the last two years, will continue for the foreseeable future, are geographically diverse, and don't require a highly specialized skill set or credentials?

I'm going to say this as a friend.

Stop thinking about promoting all these sites. Find a niche you like, get tons of traffic to it however you can, open a pay site!

You will make 10x more money. Pay sites are not that hard, you need some cash, a programmer and some common sense.

Keep at it. If the day job pays the bills, that's great. Everything else you make on top is a bonus.

I would keep the day job until my online income was consistently exceeding my day job income. I think the key to making more money online is not working longer hours but being more productive and smarter when you work.

Hey, not to pitch a biography, but I've been around for 16 years and recognize a phase everyone goes through. In short, you got your network up/rolling as a profitable routine that kept your interest and paid bills for years, now its not so profitable as you question if it's worth the time/effort to continue?

I'll be obvious in part, so others newer can also read. We all know porn was a goldmine form day one, as you just happen to find/pan in a good internet vein. Your successful competitors still have producing mines and better equipment, but their yields are also getting much smaller. So these competitors (here) are not going to give solid detailed advice and if they did, odds are you're being setup to fail.

Also, if you've noticed programs are dropping like flies as the solid ones are already too over saturated. So, if you're seeing low traffic conversions now, obviously it's only going to get worse as jumping from program to program isn't going to help you no matter what the program reps say. It's their job to say, it's all good all the time when in fact, most program reps are failed webmasters/traffic generators themselves.

Then you have the people here who'll swear if you get better hosting, webdesign, content, branding, marketing programs etc. your traffic will convert much better! The reality is you'll be lucky to make back your investment, if ever. These same people are profiting by selling the dream/success of the porn industry past. If they had true knowledge, as most will assure they do, they wouldn't be selling it. BUT in the rare instance it was profitable for you, they'd tip off their best clients in a heartbeat.

Anyway, you're at that point now where you just play though until your networks not profitable and sell off everything and call it quits? Or come to the realization, this is what you do, and don't want to do anything else. If you can, I'd highly recommend jumping into (MS) mainstream.

If you decide to make the jump, here's some advice during the transition via my horror stories. Got into porn in 1996-2002 and never really liked it because of the people, as they were all broken? Plus the things I saw along the way never sat well with me.

Anyway, I took the knowledge and tools and jumped into MS in 2002 full time. Looking back, it was pure luck because of mere timing, porn marketing methods, and the tools supporting the method. I launched a forums in a "subject" and 10 sites that would be considered a type of blog today.

Due to porn marketing methods my network exploded, within a year I had 1000's of daily active members in my Network, getting 10-15 calls a day for paid banner spots. The money was rolling in and often wondered why I stayed in porn so long when the MS money was this good?

And this is where the problem started. I had advance marketing skills, but little knowledge in the "subject". Instead of starting with a niche you know a lot about and working your way up, I did it backwards. It took a couple years until the mods and key contributors figured out I didn't have enough experience/knowledge in this vast subject.

It was like blood in the water as this ship was going down fast and formed a mutiny because I would not share in the revenues the sites generated as the contributors wanted to be paid for their posts. It got ugly fast and in the end, (3 years later) only 30-40 members a day would hit the sites.

I sold the network for what one monthly banner ad would cost in it's heyday. Later to find out the new owner would not honer the excising advertisers contracts. This didn't go over well for my reputation as six years later I completely put him and all but one of his associates out of business. I am still working on the last.

The main lessons learned transitioning from Adult to successful Mainstream? Adult sales are primarily a visual compulsion buy as MS is an interest or necessity. Interest or necessity (usually) is supported by vast knowledge and lot's of text. Meaning, know a lot about the subject before you even start or focus on a smaller niche.

People. I thought people in porn were broken fucked up deviants? Compared to the people in MS, they are mentally balanced geniuses. I once had a competitor in MS make serious death threats if I didn't pull down a site due to a SE position.

Over the years I've had every agency imaginable called on me as the newest, Homeland Security, as I must be a cyber terrorist because I posted a bad review and design flaw in a product. The company is worth several million. I've been sued several times as all were thrown out but two, because I won the counter-suits. Then took the court proceeding transcript and posted it online until they paid.

My absolute favorite was guy so mad he was going to contact all my sponsors and get banners pulled. I told him he's a shit talking pussy if he doesn't, knowing full well all the banners on that site were adSense.

I can go on, but the point is you're very lucky because you already have the knowledge launch/maintaining a profitable Network. This means you're years ahead of most because the vast majority in MS, don't even know how to setup a Network correctly or make any profit. This will always insure bitter resentment as their frustration/anger vents towards you. The true irony, I've had more then a few loathe that we share the same planet, but after we've talked? - All asked me to help them.

So if you're going to jump to mainstream the my recommendations is first find an excising domain close to your niche with a PR2 or above, WP blog, good content, AdSense, 5 free feeder blogs, good backlinks (only) to the feeders, and a good skin. If you're not making at least $75 a day after 3 months, it's time to move on to something else.

Now if you can do this, things are about to get a whole lot better for you as you start to learn more. Because that's all MS is, those who have an appetite to always learn more, as the rest lag in bitter frustration.

Have fun and make money!

Long post but was going to blog about it anyway.

good info about how crazy mainstream is, and good advice for people that want to venture over there.

however, the people still in porn are not as you say "profiting by selling the dream/success of the porn industry past" or "failed webmasters/traffic generators". there is still more money than ever in porn. its just harder to sell (ie match the right buyer to the right product).

you admit to being out of porn for a decade. what are you doing lurking on gfy if its a dead industry?

How you sell it and what you sell... is the key. You can't just "hop" over to mainstream... what are you going to "hop" to... lol

Find out what you want to sell first :2 cents: Then better yourself and hone in on the sales. Any market... same thing.

This is the best thread ive read so far. Thanks.

Another thing, and this is going to sound absolutely insane to some of you, but try to care more about being good at what you do and about the quality of what you're producing rather just how much you're making. If you do that, there's a good chance that the money will eventually chase you rather than the other way around.

HandballJim 01-05-2012 10:50 PM

I would bet many of us debate whether this is the best place to make money or to move on to another venture. When you think about it your time is very valuable and it should not be wasted. Adult is my second income, and I have a 9-5 job, and my wife is an RN.

I would love my online biz to be my only job, but there is a lot of uncertainty, a simple example is your site can rank well for a year...then it disappears from google search. WTF!!!

I also think mainstream is easier to promote, but like others mentioned you need to know all about what your promoting. I ran a successful handball website for almost 10 years, I enjoyed running it, but people became very demanding in which turned something fun into a job that was not making me money. New York City Handball is the poor mans sport, all you need is a $1 ball and a wall. I still love playing the game.

So I made a decision that if I was going to spend my free time online it was going to have to make me money. I hope to become more successful promoting the Japanese/Asian niche. I picked something that I liked and my wife is Japanese. She told me something interesting that I would have never thought of...that people in Japan would not be searching for anything with the word Japanese. They don't search for Japanese Fashion, but perhaps Tokyo Fashion. So it helps to learn a lot on how to market the niche your promoting...

i know that is an online marketing truism but not really applicable except for a small amount of cases unfortunately.

Nice job. :thumbsup

I was actually drawing more from my experience before doing whatever it is that I'm doing now, lol, but yeah you're right.

i think most of us have had that thought in the last couple of years. the problem is you are no safer working for someone else or running a mainstream business. what is the US or UK or EU unemployment rate?

when you work for someone else you are at the mercy of their decision-making, not just market forces or your own effort. when you work for yourself, it is totally up to you whether you succeed or fail. i know its scary and a lot of times you question whether you will make enough money to survive. but that is easy to overcome. just have confidence to know that whatever comes up, you will figure out how to get through it.

a lot of us have spent hours/days/weeks/months brainstorming/drinking/trolling to figure out what moves to make to stay in porn. most of the guys you still see on the boards have figured it out. if you haven't yet found your personal formula for success, just keep working at it and believe in yourself that you will find the way.

it ain't any easier in the real world :2 cents:

Want to say thanks for some of the great advice received in this thread. I really appreciate you taking time out to lend advice to those of us "lost in the wilderness", despite what people say I have met more good people here than anywhere else online.
