Obama Plan Would Slash Army, Limit Ability to Endure Long-Term Conflicts

Assuming he actually sticks to it, that would be a good start...

Quote:

The Obama administration has said it plans to cut $487 billion from the defense budget over the next decade, but the president, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other officials didn't offer details of where reductions would be made other than to say they'd shrink the size of ground forces. The details, they said, would be outlined during next month's budget session.

The implication of further cuts in the size of ground forces suggests that the department no longer plans to fight prolonged nation-building conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Rather, the department will invest in drones, unmanned aircraft, cybersecurity and creating a more agile force.

"We'll continue to get rid of outdated Cold War-era systems so that we can invest in the capabilities that we need for the future, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, counterterrorism, countering weapons of mass destruction and the ability to operate in environments where adversaries try to deny us access," Obama said.

The United States would focus particularly on the Pacific and the Middle East, Panetta said. In Europe, he added, the U.S. strategy would "evolve."

"Confronting the threats of the 21st century demands greater flexibility to ... shift forces," Panetta said. "How we defeat the enemy may very well vary across conflicts."

Ah, election time, I can't wait to be promised the world by all politicians and then to watch the exact opposite unfold over the next 4 years (no matter who wins).

Dcat 01-05-2012 07:27 PM

I don't believe a single word that comes out of that con-artist's mouth. If Obama's lips are moving, he's lying.

Remember just weeks ago Obama pledging to veto the National Defense Authorization Act while telling the America people he was fighting to protect their rights... hahahahahahaha!

I think it's best if the elites re-install Obama again in 2012. At least then it won't take Americans ANOTHER 2-3 years to figure out they are being screwed.

Shrewd gambit ... Obama wants to run against congressional opposition -- Congress will reduce the spending cuts, create further deficit budgets to placate their constituencies -- checkmate.

Isn't that the TRUTH!

Say one thing to get the votes than line their pockets from lobbyist to pass laws to help their cause.

We need a lot of combat troops. Get in, do the job, leave. Done. None of this occupying crap.

Ah, election time .......... the first thing that came to my mind as well:winkwink:

Beginning with President Bush Senior and followed thru by President Clinton the military was cut by approximately half. The Army currently has only 10 active Combat Divisions and the Marine Corp has 3 active Combat Divisions (really only two as one is mostly a paper Division). A Combat Division is normally some where around 15 thousand strong with a reinforced Division being around 20,000 strong.

Using the larger number the U.S. only has...at max... 240,000 active duty combat troops...thus there is no way in hell that Combat Troops need to be cut.

The sad thing is, people ARE that stupid to believe them, time and time again.

Makes me think the people deserve their leaders.

Some people may believe them but it certainly would not constitute a majority. In addition they often learn that they do not have the power or the will of the American people behind them to achieve some of what they say they will do.

We should build more nuclear subs and b52s... In case the USSR attacks us 40 years ago!

who is it that you have voted into power that has made a difference compared to the rest of the 'stupid' people?

If the answer is nobody, how does that make you any different? Apathy isn't a stance remember.

The US military is a hammer now. The enemy we face these days requires a scalpel.

Think about all of the money we could spend on the education system if we weren't tossing billions into outdated fighter jet programs -- or buying tanks(for what tank battle?).

Controlling the air is extremely important and tanks serve to protect the infantry...not just to fight other tanks.

mikeworks 01-06-2012 09:12 AM

You guys are talking a lot of sense.

USA needs to stop wasting money on unecessary wars.
