Understanding The History And Purpose Of FOX News

I love the last line:

"It?s against the law to lie on television in Canada. Canadian conservatives tried to change that law so FOX could broadcast in Canada. They were unable to get the law changed, so FOX does not operate in Canada!"

Story here...

Yeah that and pretty every confirmable "fact" in the column turns out to be completely false. Must of the column is opinion, which can't be proven or disproven, but the stuff that can be is mostly false.

You can get FOX news here? Where? Lemme know so I can block it.

BFT3K 01-08-2012 12:19 PM

Does Fox "operate" in Canada, or just broadcast there?

Serious question. Do they have Fox Studios and News Rooms there?

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North."

We have similar laws here in Norway, it's also not allowed to run Political TV ads.
Two important things in a good democracy.

The only purpose of fox news is the same purpose of every business: to make money

There's a difference between having a truly "Canadian" version of fox news being done here and broadcasting from here (which is what was rejected) as opposed to the cable companies being able to offer Fox "as is" out of the US.

2MuchMark 01-08-2012 10:27 PM

There's no news on "Fox News". It's basically one big 24/7 commercial for stupid.
