Mad Men

I got Mad Men on DVD for Christmas and I've been watching it.

I got a few questions.... Did they all really smoke that much? I mean, it seems like they smoked constantly - cars, elevators, offices, bathrooms, trains, home....

And did they really treat women like that? That's hot.

Grapesoda 01-11-2012 09:48 AM

yes and yes...

Sid70 01-11-2012 09:48 AM

Another question is WWDDD?

Yes, remember they smoked in planes up until the 70s or 80s?

In almost every episode, they do something that will smack you in the face and make you realize how different things were back then. You might see a pregnant woman smoking and drinking, or guys drinking during a business meeting in the middle of the day.

There's one episode where Pete gets a rifle as a gift -- right in the office. He looks down the sight at various people(some of them women), and they just smile and laugh at the whole thing, like its nothing. It's very clear that everyone thinks its cute, and non-threatening. Can you picture that happening today somewhere in America?

Anyway, it just seems like they make conscious decisions to create scenes like this, and its obvious what they're aiming to do. I love that shit.

I've just started watching it too. Excellent stuff so far.

I remember being allowed to smoke on planes, but only barely.

When I was in high school we had a "smoking lounge" for students. Imagine that today.

The scene you described with the rifle was the episode I watched last night. Do that today and SWAT would get called in. I also saw the preggo chick drinking and smoking and was a bit surprised.

It was a long time ago when I saw it -- but did it happen close to how I described?

Grapesoda 01-11-2012 11:03 AM

They actually used to believe smoking was good for you... that it broke up the congestion in your lungs. *tsk Tsk*

AdultEUhost-Sebas 01-11-2012 11:29 AM

Not really, about 60 years earlier maybe. By the 60s the data was in and link was known, except big tobacco had very strong lobbyists.

From the 50'S, when the science was known till now 60 years of rearguard action. When the Berlin wall fell the tobacco companies moved in to Easter Europe giving away free cigarettes.

I remember being able to smoke in supermarkets, banks, normal stores, planes, trains, trams, ashtrays lined the walls of most of these places.

i can remember desks at school with built in ashtrays! Actual ashtrays! - not recepticals for ink. Smoking wasn't allowed by the time i was there but the desks were part of a bygone era - thinking back, the desks must have been meant for 6th formers or for adult education or something.

They do drink a lot too. I can't see how they ever got anything done.
