If you are using windows media player still you probably can not afford membership

lol, true. from the research i've done so far h264 will play on everything so it seems like the best format choice.

i just bought an iMac and started learning FCP X. i was a die hard PC since 1990 and i have to say that i fuck'n love it! i don't have a bunch of free time to lean new programs like that but after going through it i'm glad i did.

FWIW MP4 is a CONTAINER

H.264 is an encoding format it can be in other containers as well (Like flv or mkv)

mikesouth 01-12-2012 09:26 PM

And yes I offer only H.264 in MP4 containers
no complaints

mikesouth 01-12-2012 09:28 PM

All that said I would be careful, if you offer H.264 "High" you prolly also want to offer a "BASELINE" Option High encoding pretty much requires an i7 OR a graphics card that does H.264 hardware playback

i currently offer mp4 (H264) in SD and HD. my members are happy with those sizes but i also give them wmv in SD and HD. i don't think they will miss the wmv.

Specically, it's basically the Quicktime container format, refined and standardized. Therefore developers of players have had many years to add support for it.

When we made the shift from .wmv to .mp4, we got some complainers, and we ended up offering both formats.
