DSLR and 5D SHOOTERS REJOICE THE NINJA IS HERE!!!

I just wanted to go over some of the biggest limitations of the 5D and why I think this product is vital to everyone that shoots with the 5D Mark II

FOCUS PROBLEMS!!!
while monitoring focus from the HDMI output from the 5D Mark II it shows 1080 only until you start recording then switches to 480 which is very difficult to see enough detail to focus. I have had many shots ruined due to this limitation.

12 MINUTE LIMIT
When the 5D gets hot it shuts off while you are recording with not much warning (I think this is why they have the 12 min limit and the processor gets hot doing the compression.

COMPRESSION PROBLEMS
The compression that the 5D uses casues artifacts and moire where fine lines are in the picture. This also adds noise to the dark areas/shadows in your scene.

No More CF Cards
Having to copy from 5 different compact flash cards is a pain LOL

Jayrock, they have been making attachments to translate files to mac's for some time... for the red etc....

jMEGA 01-19-2012 08:32 AM

The 5D MK II will exit out of live view mode after about 60 sec if your are not recording though

Im still not sure its practical to use yet but I am optomistic. My biggest issue right now is focusing at 480i its very difficult. I am tired of all the limitations and I dont have 15k to spend on the new Cinema EOS.

Jay-Rock 01-19-2012 08:48 AM

While these devices are capable of recording 1080p 422 signals, the HDMI output from the Canon HDMI is limited to 1620x1080 (3:2) while the camera is not recording. This requires the user to crop the footage from the external recorder to 1620x910 (16:9) and then resize it to either 1280x720 (79%) or 1920x1080 (119%).
When the camera is recording, HDMI output resolution is limited to only 720x480 (effective image resolution is 640x388, which represents a stretched 3:2 frame)

I wonder if you will notice any difference on a big screen at 119 %

That's the general conclusion I came to regarding using the 5D et al for shooting porn. The limitations and lack of autofocus make it almost impossible to shoot the kind of scene where the camera moves a lot--in other words, gonzo style.

I also don't see the point of shooting broadcast quality HD when the primary delivery method is via a compressed video stream from an internet site.

First of all you do not need a 5D MkII to shoot porn video.
The 5DmkII is a still camera with HD video as an addition.

You really need to re think what and how you are shooting.

No crafty 5D MkII tools will help in your situation.

The Canon XF300 is better suited for porn video.

This is about recording 220 Megabits per second (Mbps) and overcoming the limitations which is possible if you can update your firmware to get rid of the white focusing box and turn off the liveview auto power off via the menu. I use different cameras for different projects I shoot DSLR videos when I need extreme shallow depth of field.

A also am playing with a hacked Panasonic GH2 which is really impressive although its just a toy to play with right now.

When I shoot a gonzo scene and don't want to start and stop I shoot with the Panasonic HMC150 and I would love to shoot at 220 megabits on that camera too. The result will be virtually no compression noise in the video rendering the blacks and shadows crisp and clean. The reason I dont shoot the EX or XF camera right now is they way 4 X as much and I like the look of CCD chips as apposed to CMOS the NINJA for me seems very practical for me if its as stable as they say it is.

I like to keep my SLR's for shooting stills and my video cams for shooting vids.

That's just me, though.

MaDalton 01-19-2012 03:50 PM

we're getting more and more used to the Sony NEX FS100 - and we love it :)

Cherry7 01-19-2012 03:59 PM

I did a test with the Sony EX1 and Sony P3 and nano flash recording at 50Mbps and 220Mbps , we edited all our tests in Premiere making split screens of all the shots.

We then made a Blu ray disk at maximum bit-rate, and watched it projected on a HD projector.

The was no noticeable difference between the two cameras or the Nano flash at 50Mbps and 220 Mbps.

The Sony cameras are designed to be used as video cameras.
The camera used is not as important as the skills of the person lighting and using the camera. Using still cameras are just too much of a pain.

We shoot in HD because our films are shown on cable as well as Internet.

:thumbsup good to hear! we use either a panasonic hvx200 w/p2 card @ 720 and sometimes a Sony ex3, but looks like you nailed it, lighting & if you know what you do then you are a step ahead ! cheers

NO but it stays in 1080i when you record out of the HDMI port but its a cropped sensor not 35mm like the 5D. The result is more depth of field and less dynamic range. So the 7D is easier to focus but the quality is not as good.

Jayrock you mention the HMC150, how do you feel image compares to the D5? I have the 150 and used it once and was shocked by the image quality after being used to 7D and GH2 but maybe I did something wrong, like poor lighting?

Again, this video is not porn. Every shot was set up very carefully and corrected in post by far more advanced than those who shoot and edit porn. So you're point is?

I have an HMC150 and am very pleased with it. I've shot vid with my 5D mkII and prefer to keep it as a still cam and use the 150 as the vid unit.

What kind of trouble did you run into with the 150? Just curious. ICQ if you like.

Nope, it's almost raw, the director specifically said you can't touch it too much (for his liking) it had just minor grading to keep it consistent between shots, something and I quote "you can do in Final Cut Pro".

All porn isn't gonzo in the back of a bus.

BTW it's "your" not the contraction of "you are".

I have been shooting both photo and video with the Canon 5D MkII the week it was released.
The video does not come out of the camera as the video you posted, it is graded in post to bring it out.

I know the 5DMkII in and out.

Thanks for the grammar lesson

rumors of 5D Mark III

JustDaveXxx 01-25-2012 11:13 AM

Great thread.

I shoot porn with a Canon XF305 because of the 50mbps and the 422. Great camera love the feel and the movement of it. It complements the way I shoot. Loved it so much I picked up the Canon XF105 which does just about the same thing as the XF305 but very compact. Use that for POV and 2nd camera for certain types of shoots. The best thing about both of these cameras is that they work off of the same custom color profiles. I just move them from one camera to the other via SD card.

For stills I use a Nikon D3, but my D4 comes in February 15th. I am at the top of that list. Been on that list before there was a list. But my D4 will primarily be used for stills only. But the video option is pretty cool if I need it.

the 7D came out with better options for shooting video, But I'm told they have a sofware update for the 5D.

For everyone screaming get Nikon, I wonder why they chose the Canon 5D to shoot House?

I don't have ICQ at the moment, sorry.

My HMC150 footage looks grainy, not as sharp as 7D/GH2 and the colors don't look as good as 7D/GH2. Now this may be because Panasonic cams never work well with fluorescent lights, it always results in some green cast which can be corrected in post production, I see it in my GH2 footage as well.

But before selling my HMC150 I will do some more test shooting, also outdoors. Like I said, I used it for one shoot only which isn't enough for a final verdict.

What is the difference between shooting with a DSLR or a video cam? If you shoot professionally:

1) You never use auto focus
2) You never use auto exposure
3) You never use auto white balance

So the only difference between DSLR and video cam is the shallow depth of field, requiring more careful focussing, unless you use a lot of light and shoot with F8 or smaller.

I never shoot in any auto mode

Put your gain setting below 0db to avoid grainy video.

And thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

When I buy a new Canon body and when ever I buy a new Canon lens I send it directly to Canon to have the lens calibrated for best possible focus at the range I will mostly use it for.

I also send in older lens when I feel it is time. For example I just sent in a EF 100-400 4.5 -5.6 L IS and they replaced the Focus Ring Band, Ring Focus Rubber and Collar Eccentrics.

I did'nt there their was anything problems with my camera and lens, but when I got back everything I can for sure see there is a big different and sharper focus.

What do they charge you? Or do you have CPS?

Shameless 10-18-2012 12:19 AM

1st of all Jay Rock is totally correct. Focusing on even the Marshal monitor that is not HD sucks.

2nd of all, the guy who started talking about the C300 is full of it. There are real commercials and features being shot on the 5D MK2. The sensor is larger than the C300 and technically speaking anyone that knows about using those cameras would be shooting Cinema Primes not Canon still lenses.

PS The C300 sensor, along with the Arri Alexa and the Red Scarlets are Super 35, which sensor sizes is much smaller than the 5D, its actually almost exactly the size of the Canon 7D - which by the way is exactly the size of the C300's sensor. Which gives you a huge difference in the performance of your lenses.

My 2 cents, use what you like, don't use industry standards to dictate what you shoot on. There are no perfect tools. Use what is right for the job.
