For performance and reliability I would pick a WD Scorpio Black (7200 RPM). If you're not concerned about speed there are some great deals on 1tb 5xxx RPM drives for just over $100.

In case you do check this thread again Brad could you give me your opinion on going with 7200 drives as opposed to 5400 drives purely for a RAID setup at home. It's a 4 bay Qsnap that takes 2.5 drives. I have a separate rig for streaming movies, music etc. Do you think the extra speed is necessary?

Don't forget that the floods in Thailand have hurt HD supplies and raised prices. I purchased several 4TB Seagates a few months back after the floods, but just before the supply dried up. ~$240/ea and a few weeks later they were up to $350+ with only a few places showing availability.

But like all things, it will sort itself out eventually.

Don't try to go cheap on something that all of your data resides on.

Just buy 1 SSD for around $220 and you will have faster performance than you can handle.
The biggest 2.5" drives they make is 500GB I believe and they are not cheap.

He can still get a smaller size SSD (120GB) and use it as the boot drive (with his OS installed on it) for speed and get a 2nd hard drive 1, 2, 3+TB for storage (7200rpm, 5400rpm, 5900rpm etc..). This way he can have the best of both worlds.

For the 2nd bigger hdd he can just make it an external one.
