Please sign this petition... Tell the Board of SGK for a Cure: Don't Defund Planned Parenthood!
http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/komen/
Tell the board of Susan G. Komen for a Cure: Don't throw Planned Parenthood under the bus! The Republican plan to defund Planned Parenthood is working -- but if we take action now we may be able to stop the latest attack on women's right to health care. It was just announced that Susan G. Komen for a Cure, America's largest charity to fight breast cancer, will no longer fund a program that provides free or low-cost breast cancer screenings for millions of women who get their health care from Planned Parenthood. This is a huge blow. In abruptly pulling nearly $1,000,000 in funding for breast cancer screenings, the Susan G. Komen foundation cited a sham "investigation" into Planned Parenthood launched by Republican Rep. Cliff Stearns, one of the most militant anti-choice members of Congress. We have to stand up and fiercely defend Planned Parenthood -- and show Susan G. Komen and others who are considering caving to the radical right that we will not let extremists defund health care providers for women who include reproductive health services. read the rest at the link and please sign the petition |
Thats kinda wack... SGK has plenty of cash, why WOULDN'T they want to keep supporting screenings like this?
|
politically motivated.. abortion... click the link it's got the reason there.
Basically, SGK is citing a Congressional investigation that was started by a Republican with an agenda (he's anti-abortion big-time), as the reason to cease funding. They have it in their terms/rules/etc that they do not support or donate to any organization that is under an investigation. Planned Parenthood obviously participates in abortion, and therefore this is theorized to be a strategic attack from that Republican quarter. |

The power of the people! :thumbsup :thumbsup
http://blog.chron.com/newswatch/2012...ed-parenthood/ Komen reverses, says it will keep funding Planned Parenthood After days of outrage from Planned Parenthood supporters, the breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure will go back to funding the organization, according to reports from MSNBC and the Dallas Morning-News, which posted a release from Komen officials. ?We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities,? said Nancy Brinker and the board of directors. In the statement, they apologized for their decision to halt around $700,000 in grants to Planned Parenthood and explained the situation this way: We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women?s lives. The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not. Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair. Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities. It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics ? anyone?s politics. Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public?s understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve. We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern. |
SGK is suing any fund raising that includes "for the cure" or uses the color pink. I would suggest maybe there is a better organization to throw your support behind.

I agree. .. |
This story is getting a lot of traction in the papers and the comment sections are filled with people outraged by the decision.
I hope the negative publicity and outrage will cause them to re-consider. Yesterday I read that the Planned Parenthood in the next county up is able to offer breast cancer screenings because of an annual $10,000 grant. They will no longer be able to provide this valuable service. |
Oh wow..:Oh crap:Oh crap

And what about "Susan G. Komen Foundation Also Stops Funding Embryonic Stem Cell Research"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/101442750 :D ? |
@baddog - agreed, they obviously have shown they're willing to change the rules, so people should be more cautious about which organization they give their donations to.
@epitome - they reversed the decision already @mediaguy - I had no idea they were doing that too, from what I saw earlier SGK has revised their rules - the scary looking head of SGK put up a Youtube video - What was really nice was seeing the post on the Planned Parenthood FB page today "The outpouring of support online for Planned Parenthood and women in need of breast cancer screenings has been astonishing, and because of it, the PP Breast Health Fund has received more than $3 million from thousands of people across the country in only three days. Every dollar we received for this fund will go directly for breast exams and diagnostic services, as well as breast health outreach and education. And now with the Komen announcement, even more women will receive lifesaving breast cancer care! We look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers, and supporters like YOU. Thank you so much for your voice and for standing with us!!" Planned Parenthood Press Release So Planned Parenthood got an extra $3m out of this situation over just THREE days. That's pretty damn sweet as a side-effect |
That's what they get for putting a whacky, right wing, politically driven and probably anti-science as their #2.
