Poland suspends ratification of ACTA

Anger at last month's decision by the European Union and 22 of its member states to sign the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has led to widespread protests, hacked Web sites, and legislators backing away from the treaty.

The anti-ACTA protests that saw Polish politicians don Guy Fawkes masks in parliament have borne fruit. After experiencing a considerable backlash in Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suspended ratification of the controversial agreement, acknowledging that the consultation surrounding it was inadequate and that he approached it from a "20th century perspective."

The ACTA agreement has been signed already by an EU representative and ambassadors from 22 of the EU's 27 member states. However, due to its potential influence on criminal law, it also needs ratification by the governments of each of those member states. If even a single member state does not ratify, the agreement will not enter into force anywhere in the EU.
More and more...

It seems there is at least one real democracy in the World and it's Poland. The USA, Canada, Australia and most of other EU countries can only dream about such a democratic government.

Congrats to all the Polish GFY'ers :thumbsup

P.S. To those who love to lead the thread off-topic. My country is not a democracy too (and never was), but I'm talking about ACTA right now.

Remember the Polish presidents plane crash? His twin brother is Tusk's main political opponent. Tusk was basically telling everyone to go pound sound regarding ACTA and that they are signing it anyways, whereas Kaczynski, probably having no clue what the fuck ACTA even is, saw that so many were protesting against it that he suddenly came out as if he was the biggest opponent of ACTA in the world. Tusk had no choice if he wants his party to stay in power.

This is just typical political back-peddling, exactly like is done everywhere else in the US/CA/EU...no democracy here folks.

Funny, man...Only capitalism remains as far as 'democratic' countries go. If Romney gets in they will have to build back peddling machines in the WH for him to work out on...you know, keep the bs machine fine tuned...

it was suspended due to mass protests of young people...
If you earn 400 euros monthly in humiliating job (like call center for example), and THEY want to take your FREE mp3s, movies etc...You would protest too ;]

free access to mp3s, movies etc. was one of the things that kept those young people still in Poland ;]

Not like we don't have any antipiracy laws as for now...We have...but they are not enforced that much..so people were scared that after you will land in prison/ get fee for downloading movies and songs...

This is how the real (non-theoretical) democracy works.
