That's one definition of addiction - when one has lost the power of choice. Later they may be offered a choice to put in the extreme effort to recover or not at a time when they can see the truth about themselves. Certainly many addicts aren't weak people. Think of all the extremely successful people who are / were addicts or alcoholics. Willpower is simply as useless against addiction as it is against a Colt .45. Until ...

Sometimes they are shown a path to recovery based on spiritual principles and for some the choice between spiritual life and alcoholic death is a difficult choice to make.
