I have a 1 year old now, so I'm going to list the weird things we got that helped a LOT when my daughter was born:
teething toys a "mommy clip" (it's a huge ass clip that looks like a rock climber) a warmer for wipes (it's like 20$, and saves me a lot of screaming) a gift certificate for a night out (that first month = little rest, good to get out) a case of beer for the dad (put a bow on it, and now it's classy san diego) dr browns bottle warmer a "glider" (not a rocking chair) a nice playmat....we got the wagamama baby zabu (http://www.pnmag.com/maternity-baby-...mama-baby-zabu) BEST FUCKING THING EVER don't worry about toys. for the first few weeks, the baby can't really do anything but look up. probably the gift i liked the most was that wagamama playmat because it gave you 10 seconds to run to the bathroom to piss knowing that your daughter can't roll out of the mat she's on. my daughter's favorite? wipe warmer. if you use cold wipes on her now, she SCREAMS |
i always buy one of these blankets with the tags around the outside. babies love to suck on the tag on their blanket so this group made them with tags all the way around..genius.

MONEY those things are expensive, especially when you wife runs away with one of them and sends you bills. A new one move in with one and that's just more bills.
On a more serious note, if the mom doesn't have one of these, get her one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg |

The best gift you can give the mom is a spa treatment. After birth, they should be pampered so she'll get a chance to get her nails done, have a massage, get her hair treated to some TLC, etc.
Just a thought .... |
Some type of local meal delivery service gift card so they don't have to worry about heavy cooking for a while.

I'd definitely hit up Etsy. There's a ton of cute shit there. And people love handmade stuff. I love that site - from both a selling & buying point.

My favorite thing ever when I had my baby was the baby wipe warmer.
You change their diapers all day long, and when you clean their bottom with cold baby wipes they hate it. I would too! lol Baby wipe warmers, I thought that sounded ridiculous til I bought one. It spares the little one from so much discomfort and makes mom and baby happier. lol |
My brother really appreciated the diapers I bought for his daughter for her first few months. I Amazoned it.
