Exactly - back it up first.

These days I don't back up anything, but that's because it's gotten to the point where it's pretty smooth and we never have problems any more. But that wasn't the case a few years ago.

Also, update your plug ins first. The one problem I used to see the most with upgrading was plug ins would fuck up with newer versions.

good ole konami code.

Oh, for real though, usually upgrades are pushed for functional reasons, but they also plug holes that allow for injects.

I'd remove any specific references that can be crawled by a search engine that has a version number on it.

If it's more than 4 versions old

Do a full Sql backup. Then just do a new install in another directory and make sure all of your content looks good. Then just change your root directory to the new host. Some times doing a version jump from a really old install will just break shit.

Thanks for the tips.

step 1 - make backup
step 2 - auto update from within WP
step 3 - there is no step 3...

Supz 03-05-2012 07:50 PM

if its really old and there is no real reason to upgrade, dont. If you have to upgrade. I would attemp doing a fresh install elsewhere and rebuilding the site with backups and xml imports to make sure you can easily rebuild before you just upgrade it.

Don't forget to hold Reset when turning the Power off or you might lose your save data.

I believe they recommend doing it manually, .2 versions at a time for less chance of fucking it up. That is what I do and I have not had any issues.

The latest version of Wordpress runs on a different version of php than the early ones.

Good link, I have one as well I need to backup from a 2006 install

fris 03-06-2012 08:31 AM

i would look at the plugins you have installed first, if they have updates to work with the latest version of wp, and if you really need them incase they dont work with latest version.
