This is one of those words I always avoided saying out loud because I did not know.

meem :2 cents:

d-null 03-07-2012 08:22 PM

I remember first hearing and using this word in the very early 90's, when interactive CD's were the big thing before the internet took off :2 cents:

In a hilarious coincidence I used to know someone who avoided saying "epitome" because he didn't know.

Reminds me of the first time I was talking to a friend about MySQL and I was saying "My S-Q-L" and he was saying "My sequel". Still not sure who is right lol.

Having verbal conversations about internet related shit, especially programming, is pretty weird.

Yeah no shit, it is weird. I had some issues with mysql tuning etc lately and talking about it verbally I found myself using "my sql" fwiw.

But apparently lighttpd is lighty so.. .

ottopottomouse 03-07-2012 09:40 PM

in the case of mysql mysequel is right...its essentially a trademark

in the case of SQL S Q L is correct (for Structured Query Language) though the term sequel has fallen into popular use making it correct enough as well.

This flows the best.

Mutt 03-07-2012 11:34 PM

so true with these web words, when i have to talk about them out loud i'm always unsure how to pronounce them since other people in my world aren't geeks. so when i get on the phone with a tech i just say 'yeah about the my-es-que-el/mysequel however u say it .......'

i don't know the proper pronunciation of a GIF after all these years, whether it's a hard or soft 'G'

and for a long time I actually referred to GFY as Giffy rather than GEE-EF-WHY

hmmm, can't think of others at the moment - sure there are more

That's an easy one for me. Been using it like 15 years now online. Courtney Love started Epitome Productions back in the 90s. I read an article on it and thought now that's a handle maybe one other guy on the net has.

I say sequel. Another thing I never knew if I was right.

And is it pop3 or P.O.P. 3 now that I think about it? And is the other i-map? That's how I say it.

Mutt 03-07-2012 11:58 PM

i say pop3 same way as i'd say soda pop three

Jakez 03-08-2012 12:36 AM

Lol @Mutt yeah GIF is another tricky one. I always said "jiff", "giff" just sounds like a speech impediment or something.

I guess whichever is easiest/fastest to say.

They invented these cool things called dictionaries where you can look up how to pronounce words. They are super wicked.

Don't get me started on MAC and Mac.

EddyTheDog 03-08-2012 02:07 AM

I do it all the time with Spanish - If I need to use a word that I have just seen written down I try and think of an alternative - even if it makes sound even more stupid.....

Socks 03-08-2012 02:12 AM

It's May-May.
