they dont work...the guy ahead of me the last time i went through..had a lighter in his pocket as well as nail clippers. He had on regular looking pants. not even thick leather.

It originated on dailysquib.co.uk which seems to be a knock-off of Theonion.com.

snopes.com has a blurb about it being satire as well.
