I need help with a site that I only have ftp access to
 

Hi all,

I have a site that a programmer made for me on his hosting and he has now vanish completely, I have tried for other a year to get in contact with him and no response. Anyway I am afraid his hosting will expire and my work on the site will go. I only have ftp access. Can you guys think of anyway I can transfer the site from his hosting to mine easily?

Simply copying the site doesn't work, it is coded with Ruby on Rails.

Any suggestions welcome please.

Well, download it to your hard drive first and foremost. Then figure out getting it working on your own server later.

everything has been copied but they need access to the database. Is this possible?

database details should be in the script, suck it out with PHP if you don't have admin access.

That could be tough if you don't have admin access.

As otto mentioned - get the db info from the code and use php toexport all the info in the db.

there should be a config.php file... open it and you will find there the data that you are looking for.(db info)

and also try contacting the hosting, phone them up and say you want to take over the billing, might work. they are normally greedy bastards and will work with you

Thanks guys. yes programmer just "vanished". will try "sucking" the details. you still think its possible if encrypted and with ruby on rails?

Get the database info from the files via FTP, as already ststed, all of the database info should be in a file somwhere. Afterwards, try to login to the database and export everything or write a code that will export it for you.
