Setting expiration on HTTP headers?

I am looking to optimize my page load time using Google's Page Speed tool. I am looking for someone with a vast repertoire of knowledge who may advise me on how to set up my server to set expiration for static resources such as images, as well as other related matters (ex. whether or not it is worth it in my particular case, and other SEO queries).
