anyone able to identify this spider?

never seen one like this before, it had the attributes of having legs that were bent quite high off of the ground relative to it's body, kind of like you see with a tarantula, but it also had a look of being dead, so that when I discovered it sitting there I thought it was dead, but when I got close to it it moved faster than any spider I have seen, ran about a foot in the blink of an eye, then stopped and sat there again, here it is, still alive, just sitting there...... fuck was it ever fast moving though

anyone able to identify it from this pic? (sorry about quality, lo-res flash phone camera shot)

Looks like a Hobo spider.. They are venomous and create necrotic tissue if bitten.. search google for them..

Entomological expert here.

From your picture my educated guess would be the Brown Recluse spider.

d-null 04-04-2012 08:27 PM

I'm in Northern California

candyflip 04-04-2012 08:29 PM

Who's the guy here who got bit by the spider and passed away as a direct result of it?

that him?? :helpme

papill0n 04-04-2012 08:47 PM

i would say it resembles the huntsman spider - common here in au

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hu...cancerides.jpg

they pull their legs up close and then really hit turbo - very fast for short bursts

There are only a couple of spiders you would need to be concerned with in N Cali and that is almost certainly not one of them, though it's not the greatest pic. Look up brown recluse and black widow. If not one of those, then you pretty much have nothing to worry about.

brassmonkey 04-04-2012 08:58 PM

it looks gold to me

They are but they don't usually bite and its more like a bee sting if they do.

They have killed people in Aus and NZ - The ones they get there like climbing in cars, and of course if you find that fucker dropping out of your sun visor you wont be concentrating on your driving...

good idea

I bet in the future we will have AI good enough that you would be able to point your phone camera at an insect and it would tell you instantly what you are dealing with

There is an app that you can use to identify trees - You point at a leaf and it will tell you what tree it is from...

I was once about to get in my car, and a huntsman scurried across the seat I was about to park my backside on... I'm not terrified of spiders (I usually relocate them) but it still gave me a good fright :)

If you google "the most common spiders in Northern California"

Brown Recluse... also looks like the pic you posted.

fucking huntsman, woke up one night and there was one on the wall above my face. Sprayed nearlu a whole can of "BUG OFF" on it, then hit it with a shoe and it dropped down the back of the waterbed. Went to clear it away in the morning and the fucker had gone.

Put my bike helmet on one day, went out in the drive to go for a ride and pulled down my tinted visor and one of the fuckers was there. I'm now the south pacific helmet remover record holder.

Chio ripped a bunch of people off and disappeared. Same with JimTheFiend.

6 years ago now that Bjjb passed. Seems like just yesterday really.
