PHPBB used to be riddled with holes and bugs and other issues. Haven't touched it in years.

vB seems very bloated.

I have many vB forums running with no issues. What is the problem you are having?

Adult Insider Dave 04-10-2012 12:28 PM

What's wrong with VBB?

mamaliga 04-10-2012 12:47 PM

The admin panel from vbuletin 4 has only changed to include the new products; the newly tweaked blog and the CMS. But not much else has changed.
As unhappy as I am with vBulletin between the price increase, crappy new features implementation (think Social Groups).
Everything has a sort of 3d quality to it but is no more impressive than a spinning globe gif.
vBulletin 4 is a total disaster imho.
Just purchased last night an ipb licence, right now i`m doing the migration from vbuletin 4. I’m a proud IPB user now. To me, it feels more like a forum system than vBulletin does. Although vBulletin has loads of mods, I find that half of the mods that are in the database are already built into IPB. Plus in my opinion vBulletin is going downhill.

Adult Insider Matt 04-10-2012 01:05 PM

Mamaliga + sarmale = win ;)

Oh and, i like VBB

http://xenforo.com/ - software developed by the former lead developer of vbulletin. Quite impressive software to be fair.

Killswitch 11-07-2012 11:56 PM

If it's so crappy, why don't you build a better product? Easier to bitch than act, isn't it?

johnnyloadproductions 11-08-2012 12:00 AM

Are you running vb5?

I wouldn't do that until it's out of beta for a bit, you'll just get upgrade headaches.
Nothing wrong with vBulletin, heck that's the server side software we're using to bitch about vBulletin right now! :upsidedow

I really fucking hate forum software... it's like a full time fucking job if you install that shit on any of your sites. Spam, spam and more spam

Not true anymore. All you need to do is set up the built in custom q&a on registration. That's it. No mods needed. Haven't had spam for a couple years.

Its great - I have been playing with it for a while and love it.

If we weren't so invested in vb I'd be looking for a different board. vb is good if you're going to use it straight out of the box. However, as soon as you start making custom templates, plugins and scripts, updates start getting looong.

I'm also not exactly impressed with all the bugs that vb has, that they know they have, and they simply push the old code into the next version with whatever new features instead of fixing the known bugs for the new product. We have quite a few tickets still open that we reported when vb4 came out.

That's why you need to write custom code blocks for verification in the registration form template.
Of course bots can be adjusted to work this over but you'll get a majority of them out. Another thing is invision power boards or IPboards, allows with there subscription automatic pluggin into their spam database and the spam virutally goes to 0. It's easy to get pages and pages of spam if you just let even a small forum sit idle.

Community is great, but at a price I guess.

Interesting I happened across your nick. Roald probably wouldn't want it but it'd be interesting to see what kind of arrangement you have with him over at freeones as I know you are running vb4 (even with brand removal and mods it's easy to see the evidence). You've got more posts over there than roald has over here.
I'm sure spam is a big thing over there, ewwwww boy.

Yes i suppose that would work but at the moment i use keycaptcha because they showing ads in captcha so you can make some money with it too and not just use it to prevent spam.

You should take a look here : http://www.forum-software.org/forum-...-burning-board and then decide what would be best forum script for your needs.

Exactly, they push out new shit instead of fixing the basic features.

What annoys a lot is that people cant automatically get a list of threads where people have quoted them.
Even SMF have this feature! It's a fucking must for a forum to increase the discussion. vBulletin is on version 5 and still miss this feature.
The day after I switched from SMF to vBulletin people started to complain that they missed this function.

Thats a free mod here - http://www.dragonbyte-tech.com/vbeco...o&productid=20

Works well.

Emil 11-09-2012 04:24 AM

There is a problem with vBulletin and PHP 5.4. You cant quote or edit posts anymore because no text will show up in the textbox.
I started a support-ticket some months ago but they haven't fixed it yet.

I solved it by writing a small "hack" that used the searchengine to find the posts but thanks! :thumbsup

I think that's one we reported ages ago. I can't remember what the cause is off the top of my head, but it was part of their crappy code and using the java wrong, or something like that. We solved it, but our programmer had to go in there and mess with the java in the CK editor. While people can quote and edit...the form is noticably slower.

You cant expect a script you paid for to work. ;)

I found a solution that worked fine, just tested it:

This also occurs when previewing a post containing said character.

Disabling the plugin/hook system via the ACP doesn't resolve the issue. This has happened both on the main board (running 4.1.12 PL1) and the test board (running 4.2.0). However, I could not reproduce the issue here.

Any thoughts?

(EDIT)I reuploaded the 4.1.12 PL1 /clientscript folder to the main board as a test (though no files in said folder have ever been modified) and got the same problem. The Suspect File Versions check doesn't report any issues with vB files. However, the server is running PHP 5.4 (I would hope this isn't the problem, as I can't put it back to 5.3).

(EDIT)Looking at the CKEditor site, it appears that a change in the default encoding of htmlspecialchars() (from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8) causes the editor to throw a blank box in some instances. Peachy.

I fixed it on my board by the following change to /vb/ckeditor.php

Line 507:
htmlspecialchars($value)

Changed to

htmlspecialchars($value, ENT_COMPAT | ENT_HTML401, "ISO-8859-1")

That's right, it was the special characters. ;-)
