SALEM, Conn. - A 6-year-old boy helping his father on a landscaping job during school vacation was killed Tuesday after getting pulled into a wood chipper, state police said.

Jeffrey Bourgeois was putting a branch in the chipper at about 8:45 a.m. when it yanked him into the machine after his father momentarily turned his back, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman. The accident happened at a home in Salem, a town of about 4,000 people nearly 30 miles southeast of Hartford.

Vance said the accident was so terrible that grief counsellors were called to the scene.

"The little guy was apparently trying to help his dad," Vance said. "It's a very tragic and difficult scene for everybody."

Jeffrey and his two older siblings were with their father, Scott Bourgeois, who owns C&S Tree Removal. The family lives in Salem, less than a half-mile from where the accident happened.

Jeffrey was a first-grader at Salem Elementary School, where he was honoured in the school newsletter with a "Caught Being Good" award in December.

Jeffrey and his family also enjoyed running in road races. In the Salem Kids 1 Mile Race in April 2011, he finished 45th with a time of 12:32, according to thelastmileracing.com.

The town's fire chief, Eugene Maiorano, was the first emergency responder to the accident.

"We're getting counselling for the family," Maiorano told WTNH-TV. "The family lives right across the street from me so I was the first on the scene. Saw that we had basically kept everybody away."

Salem First Selectman Kevin Lynden called Tuesday "a very, very sad day for our Salem residents. This was a Salem family, very good family in town, a well-known family. Our hearts and prayers go out to them."

The interim superintendent of Salem schools, Kaye Griffin, said a school would open during vacation week to provide counselling to students accompanied by parents. She said the school system is also developing plans to offer counselling for students and staff members when classes resume next week.

Fucking careless. I helped my dad do stuff when I was little but wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near a woodchipper that could have eaten me.

Im sure it was his plan to have his kid jump into a wood chipper.

vdbucks 04-13-2012 05:13 AM

Why isn't this all over the news?

I mean, fuck.. he was just a truly innocent kid and his dad should be thrown away for at least negligent homicide...

Where's the outrage?

Where are the protests?

Why isn't everyone screaming for justice?

Oh, nevermind... the kid would have to have been black (and the father white) for all that to happen... then people would be saying he pushed the kid into the wood chipper...

Yeah - That's how it works.

The 1000's of horrid accidents that happen every day are all racist attacks....

No thanks, I have better things to do than sit around and harp on some absolute nonsense.

Very unfortunate...

sperbonzo 04-13-2012 06:13 AM

I can't even imagine what the Dad is going through.... I don't even want to try.

.:(

DamianJ 04-13-2012 06:14 AM

If only DVTimes' dad had let him play with a wood chipper age 6...

Constant Phil 04-13-2012 06:20 AM

Honestly...who lets their kids play near a wood chipper, let alone turn their back to them. Its like leaving a kid to swim by themselves. Very careless and negligent

L-Pink 04-13-2012 06:23 AM

Worse yet the father owns a tree service company. Really should have known better.

scarlettcontent 04-13-2012 06:26 AM

Yup. Certainly sounds careless to me. Regardless of how quick it happened. A kid shouldn't have been anywhere near there in the first place...

brassmonkey 04-13-2012 09:03 AM

im thinking they should change the design the opening should not be that big.

Sarah_Jayne 04-13-2012 09:40 AM

Dear lord. I can't even imagine.

Almost anything would be better than a deadly open ended machine that creates a natural vacuum effect due to the rotor (or w/e, i'm not a mechanical engineer) and blades spinning so fast...

Tom_PM 04-13-2012 10:14 AM

Heard about it last night.. really nasty.

All similar deadly accidents happen when you "just turn for a second". Really tragic accident. Was never grief councellors back in the old days, I wonder how well they help kids of 6.. seems too young.
