Thank goodness for Strongbox

Just had a join transaction come in from a US credit card holder but the subscriber is a Russian thief. Luckily I had Russia blocked in Strongbox! We've obviously had this happen far too many times before!

Interestingly the transaction was originally blocked by Epoch due to the user being in the "negative database" according to NATS. The signup cascaded to CCBill which then allowed the signup! And I thought CCBill scrubbed hardest!

Nurgle 04-28-2012 09:16 AM

strongbox works damn well and so simple to run :)

Radical Bucks 04-28-2012 09:19 AM

Frog works even better

iSpyCams 04-28-2012 09:22 AM

CCBill has been allowing a lot of countries now that they never allowed before.

And I don't think that they scrub harder than Epoch now or ever did, the increased throughput you see on Epoch is because of them being able to process some debit card/check card/ATM cards that CCBill can't or maybe just doesn't.

Probably a kid.

DWB 04-28-2012 10:06 AM

How do you block countries in Strongbox? Didn't know I could do that.

raymor 04-28-2012 10:38 AM

Glad we could be of service, BNMedia.

Strongbox 5.0, due to be released in a couple of weeks, will have a pretty GUI for it. For the last few years it's been in the config file along with IPs to ignore like Verotel's, etc.

BNMedia 04-28-2012 11:04 AM

This guy is very persistent. He signed up again, despite realizing his country is blocked! It appears that he tried using a proxy as there is a US IP login, but proxy logins usually finish up getting blocked too
Throttlebox shows that no files were downloaded so all is good! :thumbsup
I've had CCBill block the card now.

Thanks Ray :)
I look forward to seeing the new version of Strongbox. What's the deal with upgrades?
Is this included with my support subscription?

We'll announce an attractive upgrade offer. I don't recall whether you produce your own content. If you do, contact me about free upgrades we're doing for a few people.

We've always said support includes updates within the same major version, so about five years of updates. For example, you can upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, etc. Because 6.0 might be a very different product with very different pricing, we don't know ahead of time what upgrades to a different major version will be. For example, it's possible that one day version 6.0 will be software as a service, priced by number of logins. We could do what the "competition" has done and do monthly pricing. The point is, I don't know what will happen years down the road and I don't make promises I can't keep. Therefore we don't make a commitment about upGRADES that may be years away, only upDATES within the same major version.

BNMedia 04-28-2012 12:15 PM

Yes, I produce all my own content. I'll get in contact with you shortly.

I totally understand what you are saying about updates for the same version, etc..
I do think it would be a shame if you did move to a software service platform as your current one off pricing is one of the reasons that I chose Strongbox over the competition a few years ago.
Of course you have to do what's right for your business.

I've also looked at Clonebox with interest a few times. Maybe I'll add that to my package at some point. I have daily backups with ISPrime but I don't feel 100% confident as I've (luckily) not had you use it so far so I don't know how efficient it is. I do realize that your disaster recovery with Clonebox is much more efficient. But anyway, I digress. On with fighting the Russian thieves and pirates! :pimp

lol ... excuse me, but most of the drama about thieves and scammers from last time was about americans ... blocking russia, country with that much rich people, is a bit paranoic, isnt it?

BNMedia 04-28-2012 01:01 PM

Not at all. I had a huge problem with file sharers a while back and the biggest culprits were Russians using stolen credit card details. I analysed our members and at the time we didn't have a single legit Russian member.
Since I took this action I've seen a lot of fraudulent credit card signups with US credentials get refused access when they try and login. Subsequently I've also significantly reduced our DMCA output.
Its a no brainer to me, but this action may not be appropriate for everyone!

mikesouth 04-28-2012 01:26 PM

count me in on the upgrade ray yer the best and your product and service are unequaled

Barefootsies 04-28-2012 01:31 PM

Harmon 04-28-2012 02:49 PM

Still easy to get around.
