What Hollywood Film Affected You The Most
Just curious what was the last Hollywood film that affected you the most emotionally, the last one or the one that did it with the most impact?
For me there has been a handful but I have to say the one that stands out the most by far is REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. This film made me suicidal. I had to watch it 3 more times just to desensitize myself to it. Just curious what is yours? Doesn't have to be in a negative or counter culture way, but just curious on the movie and the emotional impact it had on you, positive or negative. |

I'd hardly call Requiem for a Dream a Hollywood film.
|
Have to agree with you it was Requiem. Powerful visuals in that movie.
|
movies don't have such an impact on me.
|
I pretty much decided to get divorced during American Beauty.

Requiem for a Dream was a strong movie.
however i think it is Jaws. im still terrified when in the ocean. I usually only go in far enough to lower myself under the water. |

Children of Men.
The scene inside the building near the end is something to see. |

I don't think there are that many tear jerkers produced anymore. I know the wife cries at What Dreams May Come, The Notebook, and especially The Color Purple, which is a really powerful movie. These days most movies seem to be car crashes, sex scenes explosions and CGI. Mostly fluff without any substance. |
The Deer Hunter.
From a subjective perspective, it really is one of the greatest movies ever made. The Deer Hunter is also an emotionally CRUSHING film. Absolutely devastating. Incredible film, a must watch. also, 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's the BEST movie ever made. Pure art. Imagine seeing that in theaters in 1968? My head would've imploded. In fact, it still does. No movie ever made will ever come close to 2001. It's unrivaled. |
Jaws for sure. I lived near the ocean when that had premiered. I'm telling you after that movie opened, the BEACH was full, but the ocean was empty! It took weeks for it to look normal again and that's a fact.
Also loved and still love 2001. |

Latest knock me on my ass movie is "what the bleep do we know?" |
Dancer In The Dark. Bjork was amazing in that movie but it jacked me up so bad I will never watch it again.

fightclub has some deeper shit going on in that one that most miss.

Top Gun changed my life.
When I saw Top Gun I was a high school drop out, hooked on drugs, and pretty much homeless - going from friend's couch to friend's couch. After seeing Top Gun, I wanted to be that motor cycle driving military guy living on the edge. A few weeks after the movie I joined the Marines, which was the best thing I've ever done. http://popcritics.com/blog/wp-conten...05/top-gun.jpg |

Crash. Not the recent bullshit, David Cronenberg's "Crash."
http://www.muchocine.net/img/crash1.jpg I watched that in high school, and I watch some messed up shit, but at the end, I just stared at the tv and went, "that's fucked up." |
"old yeller"
no film has affected me since....only books have |
|
Hmm, hard to say. I know I really liked Bicentennial Man or What dreams may come.

Requiem definitely has to be up on that list for me. I wouldn't call it recent, though. Black Swan was incredible, and really inspired me in a strange way to focus more on my work and my health. It's hard to explain, really.
|
The very end of Saving Private Ryan is brutal, same with the scene in We Were Soldiers when the wives are delivering the death letters. Couldn't watch it more than once.

why are people comparing movies to books exactly? nobody here is saying they are the same thing.
lots of requiem mentioned in here, i've seen it twice and i really don't understand what is so moving about it.. trainspotting is a far better movie about addiction and life decisions, better characters and soundtrack even ;) |
Swimming with Sharks
|
Jaws, no doubt.

|
Not Hollywood but a Japanese film where there were things visible in mirrors that weren't visible in the room. Might have been Ringu?
|
The Boondock Saints
...eventhough it's probably not your standard Hollywood crap (Thank God). |
E.T. I cried when E.T. had to go home :(
that and Captain Ron |
I just watched Human Centipede 2 recently on Netflix and it made my stomach hurt. Terribly awful movie, though. lol
|
Another vote for Requiem...it's still hard for me to watch Ellen Burstyn in anything else and not think of her as Sara Goldfarb....even one of my favorite movies of all time, The Exorcist (another one that fucked me up pretty as a kid)
Rocky Horror Picture Show I met my wife performing RHPS. The first time we met, she was Frankie and I was Rocky. The first time we performed as a couple, she was Janet and I was Rocky. Toucha Toucha Touch Me was extremely hot that night ;-) I even proposed to her onstage (a night she was playing Brad and I was playing...Rocky...must have been my golden undies...). At our wedding, Time Warp was the closing karaoke song, sung by all our fellow cast members. |
hmmm
The last one that really effected me is Hearafter. Such a sad movie

Another vote for What Dreams May Come. Very emotional ending that goes from the depths of despair to an uplifting notion of reincarnation and starting all over again. For anyone who's ever found their true soulmate in life (like I have)...the movie has quite an impact.
|
If we are strictly talking impact I would go with "Clockwork Orange". I was pretty young when it came out and it freaked me out. I enrolled in a gun safety course and got certified. Dad bought me a shotgun and kept it loaded in my bedroom. Since then I have always had a loaded gun in my bedroom. "Better to have a gun and never need it then to need one and not have it".
It still freaks me out till this day just thinking there are actually people like that walking this planet. Freaky! |
